Deleting account and would prefer data be deleted now instead of waiting 30 days.

Can this be done?

Yes, you can manually delete your Teams chats and files before the account is fully deleted, but Microsoft does not provide a way to instantly purge everything from Microsoft servers immediately. (Go to the Chat tab, select the chat, click More options (...), and choose Delete (or "Remove chat history")).

For the Microsoft account itself, the normal account closure process still has a 30-day waiting period. That part cannot usually be bypassed for personal accounts.

Deleting a Microsoft account itself always follows the standard 30‑day closure period and cannot be shortened.

However, in Microsoft Teams Free it is possible to delete chats from the local view immediately. This does not delete data for other participants, but it removes it from the account being closed:

• Deleting a one‑on‑one chat:
  • The chat is removed from the chat list and from all signed‑in devices for that account.
  • It is no longer searchable for that account.
  • Exported Microsoft Teams Free data for that account will not include previously deleted chats.
  • The other person still keeps the full chat history and access to shared files unless file permissions are changed.
• Deleting a group or meeting chat:
  • The chat is removed from the chat list and from all signed‑in devices for that account.
  • It is no longer searchable for that account.
  • Exported Microsoft Teams Free data for that account will not include previously deleted chats.
  • Other participants still keep the chat and any shared content (unless file permissions are changed).

To further limit access to shared content, change or remove permissions on any OneDrive files that were shared in those chats. Shared calendar items or similar content may need to be deleted manually from within the chat or the relevant app.

So: chats can be removed from the account view and from future data exports immediately, but they cannot be removed from other participants’ accounts, and the 30‑day Microsoft account closure period itself cannot be bypassed.
