Help Understanding Secondary Sites and Proxy Management Points

When I look at various computers in secondary sites I see different results. For example secondary site SITE1 I view the configmgr client details and it will list both the proxy management point and the resident management point as the local secondary site server.. but SITE3 if I view the client details on a computer it might show the proxy management point as the primary site server and the resident management point as the local secondary site server.

I'm confused because the boundary groups for all the sites are configured in the same way. Can anyone help me understand what decides the proxy and resident mp's, how is it controlled and what is the best practice?

The Assigned MP: The MP in the primary site that the client has selected.

The Resident MP: The client agent that is is actively communicating with.

The Proxy MP : The MP in the secondary that the client agent is using if it's within the scope of a secondary site.

Usually, the resident MP and Proxy MP will always be the same if the client is within the scope of a secondary site.
