Here are some common resolutions to issues with opening notebooks:
- You may not be able to open the notebook because you are logged in with your personal account instead of your work or school account.
- If the notebook opens on OneNote for the web, make sure you are logging in with current credentials in OneNote.
- In OneNote 2016, click File > Account and Sign Out of all accounts. Sign in again using a user account with a valid license. For detailed information, see Accounts in Office.
- In OneNote for Windows, click the ellipsis (...) at the top right of the screen, click Settings > Accounts, and ensure that a work or school account is listed.
- Try opening the OneNote desktop app in Safe mode to bypass possible caching issues.
- Press the Windows key+R and type onenote /safe to start OneNote in safe mode. Then retry opening the notebook.
- If Safe mode does not work, try updating the app via File > Account > Update Options > Update Now.
- If no updates are available or the update attempt fails, try a repair of Office. Note this will take some time to complete.
- If the notebook that won't open is stored on OneDrive or SharePoint Online, try opening the notebook in OneNote for the web.
- If the notebook isn't listed, you might not have permissions to it. If it's a shared notebook, ask the owner to share it and ensure that you're using the correct account to log in.
