Limits in eDiscovery (Standard)

Caution

Microsoft retired all classic eDiscovery experiences on August 31, 2025. This retirement includes classic Content Search, classic eDiscovery (Standard), and classic eDiscovery (Premium).

The guidance in this article only applies to organizations hosted in Microsoft 365 operated by 21Vianet (China). If your organization isn't hosted by 21Vianet, use the guidance for the new eDiscovery experience in the Microsoft Purview portal.

The following table lists the limits for eDiscovery (Standard) cases and holds associated with an eDiscovery (Standard) case. For more information about Microsoft Purview eDiscovery (Standard), see Overview of eDiscovery (Standard).

Maximum number of mailboxes in a single case hold. This limit includes the combined total of user mailboxes, and the mailboxes associated with Microsoft 365 Groups, Microsoft Teams, and Viva Engage Groups.

Maximum number of sites in a single case hold. This limit includes the combined total of OneDrive for Business sites, SharePoint sites, and the sites associated with Microsoft 365 Groups, Microsoft Teams, and Viva Engage Groups.
