I have Office 2011 for Mac (14.1.3) and am unable to wrap text or move picture once inserted.  I can resize picture, but if I click on 'format picture' (Layout) , it doesn't allow me to change to 'Tight', 'Square', etc.  Any suggestions?  Thank you in advance...

The only way I can think of for wrapping not to occur is when the text that needs to wrap is inside a text box. Such being the case, you need to:

  • Right-Click (or Control-Click) on the text box and select Format Shape
  • In the list to the left, select Layout.
  • Click on the Advanced button.
  • Make sure the Position tab at the top is selected.
  • Place a checkmark in "Wrap text within text boxes for overlay objects."

For reference, see this.

There are two basic ways to insert a picture:

  • Inline: The picture is inserted right next to the text, as if it were a giant character.
  • Floating: The picture is inserted floating over the text, so you can move it around.

The way a picture is inserted is controlled throughWord > Preferences > Edit. Under Editing options, select one of the choices, next to Insert/paste pictures as. As mentioned, there is "Inline with text" (first choice); all the others are floating versions.

Once you got that redefined, let's fix the current picture:

  • Right-click on it (or Control-click)
  • In the popup menu, select Format picture
  • Click on Layout and change Inline with text to one of the other choices

Note there is an Advanced button that will take you to still more settings.

Instead of using a text box, try creating a one-celled table. (Remove the cell borders the same way you would with the text box).

Place your image and text inside the cell.

If you place the text and image inside a "table" instead of inside a text box, the layout and word wrap functions should no longer be grayed out and you should be able to flow the text around the image the way you want.

I noticed this thread is pretty old, but was hoping I may still get some help on this.  I am having this issue and followed the directions from Daniel above, but still am unable to wrap the text around my clipart.  Are there extra steps I may need to take or something else I should look at?  Thank you!

I found those directions on another thread and tried that too, but it still wouldn't work.  After doing more research I have seen other people say you just can't get text to wrap around clipart within a text box.  Would you agree?  I finally just inserted clipart in the spot I wanted it then inserted a text box next to it with my text.  It isn't as clean as if I could wrap it, but it worked for the moment.  Have you had it work successfully before?  Thanks for your help!
