how do I turn off "same as previous" in the footer?

I am using Word for Mac 2011 Home and Student Edition.   I am trying to insert page numbers and I want the first few pages to have no numbers, so to start page numbering on p. iv.   I can't do it because the footer says "same as previous" and I don't see any way of getting into it to change it.

Does anyone know if there's a way to do this?

By the way, Word for Mac 2011 seems to be vastly inferior in functionality to the Windows version.   I could do this easily on my PC when I had one.   There are many other features that are missing in the latest Macintosh version.

The UI may be different but the mechanics are the same:

In the Section Footer go to the Header and Footer contextual tab of the Ribbon, in the Options group clear the Link to Previous check box.

If you want to use different page number formatting or starting number use Insert> Page Numbers in the main menu or the Page Number button in the Document Elements tab rather than the Page Number button on the Header and Footer tab.

There's no question that there are differences but that doesn't necessarily mean that any particular feature is "missing" or make the program "vastly inferior". In most cases it's just that it may not be presented in the manner you're accustomed to. You can find much of what you might be looking for by using the Help feature & you're welcome to inquire here for any clarification you need.

    Regards,

Not everyone knows where the "contextual tab of the Ribbon in the Options group clear" is?  The old way was intuitive - this way is not. Actually, it does make it "vastly inferior".

The Header and Footer tab is only visible when you are actually in the Header and Footer. Choose View>Header and Footer and the ribbon should assume the appearance of the screenshot.
