Removing stubborn solid horizontal lines from Word document

I have placed a number of lines in a Word document to break it into sections.

I did this by holding down shift on the keyboard and hitting the underline key. I would now like to delete o of these lines, both of which, for some reason I do not understand, are bolder than the other lines on the page.

You would have thought that it would have been  simple enough, but clicking at the end of the line and  pressing "Delete" just deletes adjacent text rather than the itself. I do not see to be able to select the lines, either, to delete them.

I presumably must have done something to cause them to be so entrenched, but can anyone please suggest how I can delete them?

The lines are probably paragraph borders.

Click immediately above one of the lines.

On the Home tab of the ribbon, in the Paragraph group, click the dropdown arrow on the right hand side of the Borders button, and select No Border from the dropdown menu.

    Repeat for the other lines.

Word has converted your underlines to border formatting. Select the paragraph containing the line as well as the paragraph before and after it and then click "None" on the Border tab of the Borders and Shading dialog box.

To display the dialog box, click the arrow on the borders button in the Paragraph group on the Home tab, and then click Borders and Shading.

Try your cursor above the line (text insert) then press Ctrl+Q

    Hope it works.

This does not seem to work. I cannot place the cursor directly above the solid line. This is an important document as it is for a publisher.
