Sorry, John. I cannot agree with your statement that "templates are now somewhat deprecated"
I believe that the in-your-face-full of eye candy with which you are confronted when using File>New is testament to templates still being in vogue, though admittedly, there are some really awful templates on Office.com Templates.
Personally, I never use File>New as I have the "New Document or Template" command as the first button on the QAT.
Also EVERY word document IS based on a template. It is NOT possible to create a Word document without it being based on a template.
As for the distribution of templates within a corporation, that is in the hands of the Network Administrators, many of whom of course do not use or understand how Word is supposed to work. But it is well within their power to distribute templates by the
method espoused by Jonathon West in his article
