I cannot install Mendeley Cite plugin.
Is it even avaliable for Office 365?

As this issue is more related to Mendeley Cite, which is a 3rd-party program, I would remove the tag of "office-word-itpro".

@Sofya I was able to solve the issue by opening an incognito tab, logging in to my personal Microsoft account, and adding the extension.
Meanwhile, although, my office 365 licence is from my work account, I can still login into the office applications using my personal account.
Now, back in chrome, I clicked the open in desktop button. Everything works successfully.

Sorry, don't have the time for step by step. the idea is to essentially login into word using your personal account and the adding Mendeley cite to you personal account

This does not answer the question as Sofya is asking about the plugin, which is different from the cite add-in. I have the exact same issue and can't find anything related to it on the Mendeley help website, nor here.
It says that "The Word plugin for Mendeley doesn't support the Office 365 click-to-run version of Word". But many people from my University have it on their Office 365 account. What does it mean? @John Korchok
