Updating task type from fixed units to fixed work in Project Server

When we setup our templates in Server we had them default to fixed units.  In our redesign effort we have determined that we would like to change our existing projects (of which we have ~600) to fixed work.  We thought the easiest way to do this was to update each project in Professional '13 and publish the changes.

This unfortunately in Server errors and projects stuck in the queue.

Is there an easy way to update task from duration to work without encountering the issues we did?

Thanks,

Michael

    Michael --

You did not tell us HOW you made the Task Type changes.  It would help if we knew the process you followed.  Also, you did not tell us WHAT errors you were seeing in the Queue.  It would help if we knew the exact errors.

As far as an easy way, I personally would follow this process:

    1. Open an enterprise project and apply the Gantt Chart view.
    2. Click the Select All button to select every task.
    3. In the Properties section of the Task ribbon, click the Information button.
    4. In the Multiple Task Information dialog, click the Advanced tab.
    5. Click the Task Type pick list and select the Fixed Work item.
    6. Click the OK button.
    7. Save and publish the enterprise project.

The preceding steps will change every regular task to Fixed Work, but summary tasks will remain set to Fixed Duration.  This is the default for summary tasks and cannot be changed.  Please let us know what process you followed and what errors you are seeing.  Thanks!

As Dale said, but why change to fixed work? For one thing all tasks then become effort driven, so adding an extra task, even of a different skill, shares the work and reduces duration.

Fixed Units is by far the most flexible option (that's hopefully why its the default option).

I would say the real problem is why the queue has stuck jobs. Fix that and publishing all projects from Project pro will not be a problem.
