Spell check not working in tables embedded in a word template

I am using a word 2010 doc that was created and turned into a template.

  • The template utilizes tables embedded.
  • The spell checker does not work in the body of the template in the tables on all pages.
  • the table is set up in a two column format with rows.
  • Data within the rows is not spell checked.
  • It works in the cover page before the embedded tables.
  • Spell check has been turned back on numerous times but does not stay on.
  • Spell checker works on some pages but not all in the body of the template.

I have reviewed all past recommendations around spell checking, language and proofing and cannot find an answer that resolves this issue.

Select all the text in the table. Go to Review | Language | Language | Set Proofing Language and clear the check box for "Do not check spelling or grammar." If you want errors flagged with wavy underlines, make sure you have "Check spelling as you type" checked at File | Options | Proofing.

That is where the problem lies, though, and its solution. Read through Mastering the Spelling Checker. It is a fairly long article but has the solution to your problem.

Try selecting your entire document body (Ctrl+A) and check the language setting. Is the checkbox for "Do not check spelling or grammar" empty or does it have a check mark or does it have some sort of color? If it is anything other than empty, check the box until it is empty. This is a character-level setting, not by paragraph, table, or document.

If this doesn't work, send me a sample document with your tables (clear of data if you wish) and I'll look at it. Do not send it to me, though, before you have read the entire article.
