Office Online on a Chromebook in offline mode

Hi, I am using a Chromebook because it's much stable and easy to keep it clean than a Windows laptop (any model and price range). I prefer Office Online apps over Google Docs. My question is about a possibility of to use Office Online in the Offline mode, like Office 365 is offering this feature to registered users. I am not against to pay a license fee to use Office Online (or an Office 365 like) on my Chromebook as long as it is in offline mode!! Thanks for your answers!! (Yup, I really dislike Windows OS, I have "eaten" so many customers problems for years in my IT jobs!! No more Windows... unless Windows comes closer to what Chrome OS is today: clean, faster, secure, virus free, no registry database, with only required tools/apps for daily uses and no more!!! ^^)

    Hi Frederic,

To use Office Web Apps (Office Online), you have to be online and need a Microsoft account.

There are no Microsoft Office programs that can be installed on a Chromebook OS to be used Offline.

To know more on Office Web Apps, refer to the following link:

    http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/web-apps/

I hope the above information helps. If you need further assistance, you may reply and I’ll be happy to assist you.

    Thank you

After an hour with Microsoft customer support, Microsoft stated that it was all Google's fault for not letting Office 365 work on Chromebooks, and the only way to get Office 365 and Google Drive to talk to each other was to use a Windows computer and run an .exe file that would bridge the two.

I ended my trial period of Office 365 before I was charged the $99 annual fee.

Google answered the same question in about 5 minutes.  They said Chromebooks can run Office 365 as Android apps only, but there is currently no consistently reliable way to get access to Google Drive via Office 365.

I did find that you can give access to Office 365 on a file by file basis, but that didn't work for me.    I may try again in 2019, and hope that Microsoft or Google can come up with a solution.

What's the point of being able to save files from OneDrive to local storage if you can't then edit them???

Or is being able to edit locally stored files offline ONLY possible on Windows machines?

I was looking up whether or not I needed an app from the app store to use MS Office 365 on my chromebook (I already use it on my laptop & main PC) and I came across your message.

You can use any word processing program that saves in RTF format to write... then when you get online again and open it you will either be prompted to convert it to DOC or you can open it, then immediately save it again as a DOC.

I am the editor for a friend of mine writing a novel and he uses some obscure free apple program that won't read a DOC. So I use Word 365, but save it as RTF (Rich Text Format - doesn't have all the MSO bells & whistles, but it has the basics - you can always tweak it after you convert it to DOC) so he can open it on his machine.

I know it's not ideal, but since it sounds like you'd only be using it if your Internet goes down, it's an easy (and free) way to cover your hiney.

    Hope this helps.

    BB

Have you figured a way to work around this?  I like you, can't stand windows.  I have a laptop at home for sanity purposes since the university I am attending uses Office 365 University.  I LOVE CHROMEBOOK and used one for a few years until it gave up.  I am debating between purchasing another chromebook or a tablet/laptop such as the transformer.  I am 85% of the time under WIFI but I am terrified that if I ever need to open a Word or PPT while offline, I will not be able to.

Is there an application for Office 365?  I know there is one for Microsoft account (Onedrive) which I also use but I am more concerned about my school work.

Can I work on a word doc offline and then save it later when connected?  I also need to be able to read & highlight PDF files, saved under office 365.

    Thanx
