how to cite a fragment in the text itself?

hi!

i would be thankful if anybody answer my question.

briefly, my question is this: how to cite a fragment in the text itself?

for example: i am writing page 40 of my dissertation and i want to refer somewhere in that text itself, say, 47 or 30. i want to add a footnote and say there "refer to page 47 or 30" or "as i have explained in page 47 or 30". of course, i want that footnote be updated automatically if the fragment (say in page 47 or 30) i have cited, shifts to another page (say for 48 or 29), something like the option of table of content and its update would do.

thank you so much,

best

  1. Select the fragment you want to refer to.
  2. On the Insert tab of the ribbon, in the Links group, click Bookmark.
  3. Give the bookmark a meaningful name, then click Add.
  4. Repeat steps 1 - 3 as needed for other fragments.
  5. Place the insertion point where you want to create a footnote.
  6. On the References tab of the ribbon, in the Footnotes group, click Insert Footnote.
  7. Type the fixed text of the footnote, then activate the References tab of the ribbon again.
  8. In the Captions group, click Cross-reference.
  9. Select Bookmark from the 'Reference type' dropdown.
  10. Select the relevant bookmark.
  11. Select 'Page number' from the 'Insert reference to' dropdown.
  12. Click Insert, then click Close.
  13. Repeat steps 7 - 12 for the same footnote if needed.
  14. Repeat steps 5 - 13 for additional footnotes.

The cross-references aren't updated automatically, but if you select the footnotes and press F9, they will show the correct page numbers.

(Tip: if you switch to Draft View, then click Show Notes on the References tab of the ribbon, you'll see all footnotes together. You can select them and press F9 to update all footnotes in the document in one go.

Alternatively, click in any footnote in Print Layout view, then press Ctrl+A to select all footnotes, including those on other pages.)

    thank you so much,

but your solution does not work for updating.

i have done what you said and then for testing your solution i changed the page of the fragment i have bookmarked (i.e. i shifted that page down) but the number of the page cited in the footnote does not update and stays what i wrote first.
