Subscripts and superscripts not working in powerpoint - showing up as up and down arrows

I downloaded a powerpoint for class, which has many equations in it. Instead of seeing letters as subscripts and superscripts, there is a down arrow or up arrow in front of the letter. 

I have Powerpoint for Mac 2011, version 14.5.4.

How can this be fixed?  Thank you!

    Your presentations may have been created with a different version of PowerPoint or with a different font set than what your have installed. If you select only the superscripted character, what font displays in the font dropdown? If you choose Format>Font and uncheck the Superscript attribute, does it change to a normal number, or does the arrow just get bigger?
