Icons on PowerPoint files

I've upgrade to Office 2016 and now my files show the generic icon instead of the PowerPoint icon.  Oddly, it appears that older files (PowerPoint 97-2003) still show a PowerPoint icon, but newer files - including files that I've created using PP 2016

  • are showing the generic icon.  Any ideas on how to correct this?

    Hi,

    Welcome to Microsoft Community.

I would like to know if you have previous version of Office installed in the computer.

If yes let us uninstall it, to do that press windows + r (on the keyboard) at the same time and try in appwiz.cpl. From the list of programs installed choose previous version of Office and uninstall, after which let us try repairing Office 2016 and check.

You may also try changing the default program and check.

I hope the above suggestion helps. If you need further assistance, get back to us and we will be glad to assist you.

    Thank you.

    Hi,

In the search bar next to start icon, type in PowerPoint, when the PowerPoint icon appears right click on it and choose open file location. In the file location folder, choose PowerPoint icon, right click –send to desktop—and check, how the icon appears.

Hope this information helps you. Please let us know if you need additional information.

    Thank you.

I'm using Windows 7 Home Premium.

I've run both the "quick" and the "full" repair options and the problem is not resolved.

It does sound like a file association problem. What version of Windows are you running?

Have you tried repairing the Office 2016 install?

I should have been more specific, as I don't know if it makes a difference - I'm using Office 365 and just upgraded to Office 2016 through that.  In my list of assigned programs I see:  Microsoft Office 365 - en-us; Microsoft Office 2007 Primary Interlop Assemblies; Microsoft Office File Validation Add-In; Microsoft Office Front Page 2003; and Microsoft Office Outlook Connector.  So I don't believe I have any previous versions of Office on my computer unless it's somehow stored in the "Office 365" file?

I've checked the default programs and all of them show PowerPoint 2016 as the default program.

I rebooted just to be sure - but still not showing icons for the files.
