I got my daughter a new windows 10 tablet for christmas. It meets the 10.1 inch and under criteria and came preloaded with word mobile, excel mobile, and powerpoint mobile. These are supposed to be free apps yet when she tries to use them it says windows 365 subscription required. Are they free or not? if free how do we activate them without the subscription?

    Hello,

Welcome and thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Office Community.

As per your query, you can view Office documents in Windows mobile but to edit documents you will have to purchase Office 365 subscription. For more information, you can refer to the following article and check:

The following steps worked for me (don't ask me how or why :( ):

    1. Click any office app on windows phone.
    2. In the screen, it shows New, Browse & recent files. It also shows my name/account at the top-right.
    3. Clicking on you name/account at top-right shows 2 accounts associated with this application.
      • Personal Account
      • Official Account
    4. Clicking on any of these accounts, only gives an option to sign-out.
    5. Since Microsoft Support technical team suggested that I reset my device. I did not want to reinstall all the apps, take backups & then reconfigure all of these again after the reset, unless it was the only option left.
    6. With no better option, I clicked sign-out on both the accounts listed in step 4 above. I then signed in with my official account. I was able to create new Office documents now.
    7. I logged-in to my other personal account also now. My office app still worked & allows me to access onedrive associated with both my personal & business accounts.

I was facing the same issues & even had multiple calls with Microsoft Support & waiting for a resolution.

Going through the above thread, I realized that multiple Microsoft accounts (personal & office) are associated with these apps. When I signed out of both these accounts from within the app & signed back in, I was able to edit using the office apps.

    Hope this helps!

This saved my 1 year old impasse! I am now editing documents without any problem. When I did this trick (log out, login with work email), my license type changed from "Read Only" to "Office 365" and now the interface is working well

    Thanks!

    Well that is not correct!

In the product description for the app it says that this app is designed for phones and tablets. A valid Office 365 subscription is needed to edit documents on PCs and big tables (> 10.1").

This was very helpful. It worked for you but may not for the initial poster, since your work account may have the necessary Office 365 subscription.

In my case, though I have both an Office 365 subscription for my work account and an O365 personal subscription, initially when I set up my new Lumia 950XL, I was being told that I needed O365 to edit my documents. I had several fruitless calls with Microsoft support but got the edit feature only after adding my work account. It should have worked with my personal account but it might have if I logged out and logged back in.

I also now realize that when the support person was asking me if there was a activate button she may well have been trying to point me to my name in the upper right corner, which marked my account login. I would not have know how to log out since I did not fully recognize the relevance of my name there.
