I am using Office 365 on Windows 8.1

Word version 15.0.4701.1002

When I try to switch the orientation from portrait to landscape, Word hangs.

There are no add-ins.

I have tried to repair as well as re-install word. It has not worked.

I had a similar issue running Word 2016 16.0.4266.1001 Win 10 Surface Pro 3.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. I had a network printer (Work printer) as my default printer.
  2. I went home and was disconnected from the work network
  3. Opened up Word -> New blank document
  4. Tried to change the paper orientation to Landscape. --> Word seems to hang.

When I change the default printer to something that is accessible like "Microsoft Print to PDF", everything works correctly.

Word needs access to the default printer. To fix that in this case, you can install a local version of the network printer driver, or you can set another printer as the default (as you have already noticed).

The issue is resolved on it own.

There was some issue with printer as well. Ctrl + P used to make Word hang.

With great difficulty I was able to uninstall the driver and install it again after which Ctrl + P doesn't hang.

Not sure if these are related.

Does this affect a particular document or can you reproduce the problem in any document?

If you start Word in Safe mode (as part of troubleshooting only), do you still see the problem? To start in Safe mode, do the following: Exit Word if it is currently running. Hold the Windows logo key as you press R; in the Run dialog box, type winword /safe and press Enter.

    Thanks for the follow-up.

Printing problems may very well be caused by a (damaged) printer driver, as you have noticed.
