Updating to Office 2016 --> all Start Items point to wrong folder

The Office update to 2016 doesn't work properly.

The tiles in the start menu point to files like "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office16\WINWORD.EXE" but winword is not located there. The update software moved it to "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\root\Office16". The same holds true for EXCEL POWERPNT ONENOTE etc.

Please convey this to your development team.

Thanks!

I noticed the install path for Click-to-Run media is as follows:

    C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\root\Office16

However, if Office 2016 is installed from the setup.exe file on the ISO media, the path to Office is correct:

    C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office16

The added "root" folder is causing problems for us.

    All,

It is now March 2016 and the issue still occurs. Your dev team has still not corrected the shortcuts. This should really have a higher priority than you are giving it. I know I have 240 users that I will have to manually correct after the upgrade!

    Please get this corrected soon!

    thanks!

Well you know that, I know that, but the Office team seems to be a bit overwhelmed here.

I used to have Office 365 on my machine here and the other day it suggested to update itself to 2016. Fine I thought, go ahead.

After that, none of the tiles on my start menu are working. I seems that the x64 version of setup installed in a different folder than the gui guys and girrls thought about.

Henceforth I have a C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office folder, whereinwith I have an Office15 folder and an Office16 folder. The Office executables, however, are stored in root\Office16. The tiles that the installation program created (the call themselve Word 2016, Excel 2016, and so forth seem to disagree with this location and point to Office16, not to root\Office16.

And, sure, I now how to unpin and pin items to the start menu, but this time it was Office setup that did the pinning, not me. Which could confuse a future user. Which is why I took the time to point this out.

    Thanks for reading.

    Hello,

Welcome to Microsoft Community and thank you for posting your query.

I would like to suggest you that file location for Start menu tiles item is mentioned below.

    C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs

Shortcuts of the Start Menu tiles item are stored here. The default location for the Office application is:

    C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office \Root\Office16. (Windows 32 bit)

    C:\Program Files(x86)\Microsoft Office \Root\Office16. (Windows 64 bit)

You may check the file location for the Office application in the Start menu by right click on the tile and click Open File location.

You may unpin the Office application from the Start menu by Start Menu> Office app Tile (right click)> Unpin from Start.

To Pin Office application back, kindly refer to the below mentioned article and check if it helps.
