Office 2016 keeps reverting color theme back to Colorful

I installed Office 2016 as an upgrade to 2013.  Put the color scheme on grey (because annoyingly the awesome Black went away sometime in the preview.)

Now I have a weird issue where every time I close all of the 2016 applications and then reopen one of the applications, the theme has changed from grey to colorful.  This applies to reboots or just closing them all and then later opening one back up.  Oddly as well today (10/5/2015) I walked away from the computer to talk to a co-worker in the next office.  When I came back, it was on colorful again.  However that is the only time it has changed itself while open.

It seems to work correctly when it is set to Grey.  So for instance, say I open Outlook and change the theme to Grey.  When I open Word or Excel, they are also Grey as they should be.

So I'm just throwing that out there as a potential bug

Will there ever be a solution to this problem which does not require having an Office 365 account?

My Outlook keeps switching to gray on its own. (I want it to be white.) My colleague wants her Outlook to be gray and her Word and PowerPoint to be white. They keep switching on their own. It's annoying to say the least.

Well, its been over 2 years now (3/4/16, your post to 4/25/18 now) and the problem still hasn't been resolved.  I installed 2016 about 3 weeks ago and use the "Dark Gray" theme.  I turn-off my computer at night and every morning the theme resets to "Colorful."

Also, I agree with another post that the icons on the Dark Gray and Black themes should be normal colored; not white.  It may look cool, which is debatable, but not very functional.  I struggle to identify the icons in white.  Please change them back or at least make an option to have them normal or white.

Finally, in the "Black" theme, this would be my favorite choice except I can't use it because of the poor color scheme of the reminders in Outlook.  They are light gray on white which is very difficult if not impossible to read.  A reminder is supposed to poop; this color combo is a dud.
