Visio 2016 - Standard

Hi,

I have recently purchased a standalone copy of Visio 2016 standard on the understanding that it has  limited UML support. It offers a UML template choice when you open a new document but then I cannot locate any UML related shapes under stencils "More Shapes".

Searching the help, I find articles like this:

https://support.office.com/en-US/article/Create-a-UML-sequence-diagram-C61C371B-B150-4958-B128-902000133B26

Describing how to do a UML sequence diagram and marked as applying to Visio Standard 2016. Can anyone tell me if this is a bug with the product or am I simply looking in the wrong place?

Bottom of article (Showing it applies to Visio 2016 - Standard):

Thanks,

Craig

    Craig,

I did get an answer, but as I was afraid would be the case, it's not the answer you want.

    • None of the UML templates/stencils are available with the Standard edition; they are only available with Professional.
    • Pro-only templates should not appear on the Featured page for a Standard user. This is a bug that the Visio team is aware of and is working on correcting.
    • The tags at the bottom of the help text page are wrong; both references to "Standard" will be removed, possibly as early as today.

    Regards,

    Scott

    Craig,

I was able to find some UML shapes in:

    C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\root\Office16\Visio Content\1033\UML*.VSTX

I was looking for IEEE and found some stuff in the same place:

    C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\root\Office16\Visio Content\1033\EL*.VSTX

    To open:

Shapes | More Shapes | Open Stencil...

I have Office and Visio 2016 Standard.

A couple of things are puzzling me:

    1. I thought UML templates were only included with the Professional edition.
    2. You have the Standard edition of Visio and yet your "Featured" template page includes two other templates that I know for a fact are only in the Pro edition: Detailed Network Diagram and Data Flow Diagram.

For #1, I will check with the Visio team at Microsoft.

For #2, I spun up a virtual machine so I could look at a copy of Visio 2016 Standard, and sure enough, I also see templates on the Featured page that I know are only in the Professional edition. I will check with the Visio team about this as well, because it doesn't make a lot of sense that you would see templates that you can't use. Unfortunately, I think this is what's happening here: the UML template is only available in the Pro edition, despite its thumbnail appearing on your Featured page, which is why you can't locate the stencils -- they are not part of the Standard build.

BTW, I definitely see "Visio Standard 2016" at the bottom of the article you included with your initial question... if #1 above is correct then the article text is wrong.

Stay tuned... we'll get to the bottom of this, even if the answer is what you don't want to hear, namely that there are no UML diagrams in the Standard edition.

    Hi Scott,

Thank you for taking the time to reply, I believe I have tried all these things without luck, what follows is what I see:

On Visio startup is a UML template offered, It is not clear if this is in place or for download as blank and others appear here but it is selectable:

Selecting it gives this you the screen below where the create button is clickable:

Visio then opens in a new document that appears blank with no stencils offered, in the image below I have clicked on "More Shapes" so you can see the options below, there is no Software options offered as a Category at all and checking under every category that is offered there is no UML

Furthermore searching the stencils for UML does not return any results:

It looks to be like this a buggy version of Visio, but would welcome any other suggestions you have.

    Thanks again,

    Craig

If you type UML into the search bar at the top of the New page, what results do you get? Is there a UML template? If so, it should include one or more relevant stencils in the Shapes window. If this is not what you see, can you post a screen shot the shapes window if there is a UML template and of the search results if there is not?
