Can you reference another cell on another worksheet? I click the equals sign in a cell then go down to the bottom and choose another tab and click on the cell I want and hit enter but it doesn't work. If I want to reference another cell in the same worksheet than that works fine. Anyway besides typing the formula all out?

Hi there, me too was looking for an answer/solution to the very same problem. I was randomly entering words, like manually typing "=Sheet2!E2" etc but it didn't work, then I wrote "=Value(Sheet2!E2)" and you know what!? It worked! hope the same will work for you too if you are still looking for a solution!

I figured out another way. You have type a function like this:

    ='[SheetReference]'![Cell reference]

So if you are on Sheet 2 trying to reference cell D4 from Sheet 1 you type:

    ='Sheet 1'!D4

    Hello,

I read the articles again and tried again but no luck. There are 2 different ways in the articles you linked to. I shortened them below to the directions they give me. Again this is for the online excel and not desktop excel.

Create a cell reference to another worksheet

    1. Click the cell in which you want to enter the formula. <--- Did this and worked
    2. In the formula bar , type = (equal sign).   <--- Did this and worked
    3. Click the tab for the worksheet to be referenced.    <--- Did this and went to other sheet
    4. Select the cell or range of cells to be referenced.    <--- Selected the cell I want and did nothing. Also hit enter and all it did was moved down to next cell. Online Excel Doesn't work like the Desktop Excel does

Create a cell reference by using the Link Cells command

    • Make it easier to create cell references between worksheets and workbooks. The Link Cells command automatically pastes the correct syntax for you.
    • Click the cell that contains the data you want to link to.
    • On the Home tab, in the Clipboard group, click Copy . Keyboard shortcut  You can also press CTRL+C.
    • Click the cell that you want to link from.
    • On the Home tab, in the Clipboard group, click Paste . By default, the Paste Options button appears when you paste copied data.
    • Click the Paste Options button, and then click Paste Link .

On the Online Excel below is the option I get when I click on Paste Options

    Am I still missing something??

if you right click the cell you want to place the reference in and select "Hyperlink"

you can then choose "Place in this document:" and type the location

    ex. SHEET2!A1

I found a really simple solution to this - Google Sheets.  Worked first time, didn't have to post a question, wade through answers that don't work and end up wasting two hours to achieve nothing.

This answer is NOT sarcasm. It's a genuine suggestion for a fast solution.

It was quicker to convert a 17 page excel workbook to Google Sheets and post a single formula referencing one other cell than it was to do it with Excel online.

Microsoft - please up your game.
