Use smartart under the "insert tab". select "list". insert your text in the list box, delete all but one layer in the list box. highlight word on document, then go to FORMAT>TEXT FILL>PICTURE. Also under format, select the wordart option "abc transform" so you can adjust the size of your text.  make the smartart box large enough to contain your text so you can move it around, select the outer smartart box (it can be hard to select the right box, there is a clear box just outside the white solid line smartart box) and go to the format tab, select WRAPTEXT>INFORNTOFTEXT. hope this helps and makes sense!

As a workaround, you can create a document and save it in Word 97-2003 .doc format. This makes the old-style WordArt available. You can use picture fill with that style of WordArt. When you get the WordArt just the way you want it, copy it. Then use Home | Clipboard | Paste | Paste Special to paste it into your .docx document as a picture (I tried it with .PNG, but you can choose any picture format). You can then, if you want, right-click and use Save as Picture... to save it out as a separate file. The WordArt won't be editable, of course, but you do get the effect you're looking for.

I feel that  they should of kept this option in MS Word 2013. I don't know why they would want to take out this feature... Seems stupid.

This feature was available up to and including Word 2010, but it has been removed from Word 2013...

See Word 2013 - Texture Fill Word Art for a workaround.

Word 2013 no longer has this capability. Using the Text Effects button at the bottom of the Format Font dialog, you can give the letter a solid or gradient fill. WordArt in 2007 could do it, but MS has gradually made WordArt less capable over the last 2 versions.

If you have any graphics software, you may be able to do this effect with it. You can also download the free InkScape graphics program: InkScape Download. Here's a tutorial that shows how to fill text with a photo in InkScape: File Text with Image tutorial
