I cannot get rid of the Auto Correct Options button that appears every time I indent. It blocks my view and has no use.

The button I refer to is square and has a lightning bolt. I have turned off everything I can but cannot get rid of it. I have had this problem for over 10 years and sigh and take it as a bug never addressed, a service never asked for nor needed. The only way to get rid of it is to delete something nearby and it will disappear. Very distracting to the flow when one is writing.

Oh I use Mac, so it is Windows for Mac, but this problem was there before when I used Windows.

It is not a bug, but an option. This function is part of the autoformat as you type options. Uncheck the unwanted options (that'll be most of them) in File > Options > Proofing > Autocorrect Options > Autoformat as you type.

Even better use indented paragraph styles, rather than ad hoc indenting.

I too find that lightning bolt box in the text highly annoying. I have unchecked "Show AutoCorrect Options buttons" but that has not made the box stop popping up. Please provide another solution!

Thanks! It works! Unfortunately now I cannot use any autocorrect features, but I'll take it. I believe this is a poorly designed feature, because if you want auto correct functions, you shouldn't need to check boxes every single time. I will look into indented styles. I guess I can create them myself, no? Thanks again. You don't know what a relief this is!

I tried unchecking the box you refer to many many times and it just doesn't work, because that lightning bolt box keeps appearing nevertheless. Now by turning it all off the lightning finally does not appear. Maybe this is particular to Word for Mac?

    Thanks anyway!

Yes, you can create your own styles, or you can use built-in styles (modified as desired) that are already indented.

Note, however, that you don't have to give up using either AutoCorrect or AutoFormat As You Type. At File | Options | Proofing | AutoCorrect Options, there is a check box for "Show AutoCorrect Options buttons." You can clear just this check box. You can also, on the AutoFormat As You Type tab of that dialog, clear the options for automatic headings, bulleted lists, etc.--anything you don't want to use--and leave the rest enabled.
