"Content Not Displayed" error opening documents

When I open documents in Word, I get an error (screen cap below) saying...

Content Not Displayed

Some objects may not display on this device but still exist in the file.

...and the document is mostly blank, with some scattered text. When I click and drag across the screen it seems to be selecting text, but nothing appears on the screen.

Opening a new document with Command+N invokes the same error.

In finder, the document's contents appear intact and as expected in the preview pane.

Thanks!

This suggestion is distinctly helpful. It almost solved the problem for me. With only one document open content is displayed in all views except for Page Width view. I am using Word for Mac version 15.18 on a new iMac with 16 gb RAM and a 3 tb drive.

There does seem to be some fundamental problem with this version of Word; I have never experienced anything like this with previous versions.

When the content was no longer displaying correctly, I had 6 MS Word 2016 documents open at the same time. I shut down all but one document and Word started displaying content again. I am using Office 365 purchased in Feb 2016 and a new iMac with 32 gb ram and a 1 terabyte internal flash drive.

I have been using MS Word since 1984. I still have the original Microsoft Word 1.0 disk and the 512k Mac. They both work fine, but the latest version of Word 365 is temperamental, to say the least.

Update: I solved the problem by uninstalling and reinstalling word.

This got better for me after an update, but still happens. Seems to be a memory issue—too many things open or running. Closing some helps.

Or, if desperate to see some text, try copying and pasting chunks in to a smaller document or another program like textedit.

I have been having the same problem.  Tried uninstalling and reinstalling.  It fixed the problem for a day or two, then it came back.  This is a deeper issue.  Have reverted to using prior version of Word....
