Mailto hyperlink not working correctly

I am having trouble getting a mailto hyperlink to work correctly from MS Word 2016.  When I test the hyperlink to make sure it is working correctly, it opens up my web browser instead of my email program.  I am using Outlook 2016 has my email program and I am running windows 10.

Here are the steps that I take to add the mailto hyperlink to my document and the steps that I take to test the hyper link:

  1. I add my email address to my document by typing it out:
    1. robert******@rlslivingsystems.com
  2. I then hold down the CNTRL button and click on the hyperlink to test it.
    1. My web browser opens instead of a new email from Outlook.

When I edit the hyper link, here is what the setup for the hyperlink looks like:

I'm not sure what I am doing wrong.  Can anyone help me out?

    The "mailto" links should open in your default e-mail program. Are you sure that Outlook 2016 is set as the default in Windows?

    Stefan,

    I didn't even think to check if Outlook 2016 was my default.  Boy do I feel silly.  That is what the problem was.
