Web Query (.iqy) support in Excel 2016 on Mac OS X

Hi,

Does Excel 2016 on Mac OS X support Web Query (.iqy files)?

I cannot seem to be able to create a new or open an existing data connection.

When I create a document with Web Query in Excel for Windows, the Mac version can open them but cannot refresh the data or view the connection properties.

If Excel for Mac does not support Web Query, then what alternative data delivery methods are recommended?

Thank you.

This works Great but it has one minor defect there is nothing wrong with  the add-in.  But if you don't know the Stock Ticker symbol you can't  type in the company name and it picks out the stock symbol.

Well I suppose I should thank Ted for pointing to one of my web pages that is now out of date in a link that is linked to what Ted linked to (all this indirect linking getting to answer irks me).

At any rate, Ted indirectly sends you to one of my pages:

http://www.agentjim.com/MVP/Excel/WebQueryHowTo.html

On that page I refer to example queries to MSN, and these don't work any more because Dow Jones put the kabosh on these particular web queries. They want $$ for that data now.

Excel on the Mac comes without the fancy little web browser that the Windows version has that lets you visually set up web queries.

On the Mac, you can use URL based web queries as described in the link. To the best of my knowledge the Yahoo examples should still be working.

I think you should be able to refresh web queries made in Excel for Windows even though the fancy little web browser isn't available. The selection cursor must be somewhere in the query result set when you attempt to refresh the query either by right-click or from the Ribbon.

There is a new way to get stock quotes in Excel 2016, but you'll have to be sure Excel is up to date before trying this.

Make sure your Mac has a working internet connection before checking for updates. Install Mac OS X updates followed by Office updates.

    Mac OS X updates:

To get Mac OS updates, go to the App store on your dock, and then click the Updates button to reveal available updates.

    Office Updates

    To get the update:

    1. Open any Office application:
    2. Make sure your Mac has a working internet connection
    3. Go to the Help menu and choose Check for Updates
    4. Let AutoUpdate check for and install updates
    5. Restart your Mac

After restarting your Mac, open Excel and go to Excel Preferences. At the bottom of the View preferences check the box for In Ribbon Show Developer Tab, which turns the Developer tab on in the Ribbon.

Now go to the Developer tab and click the blue Add-Ins button (not the one that looks like gears).

    Click STORE

Search for Stock Connector (by Michael Saunders) and install it (it's free)

With this add-in you can link the results shown in the stock connector window to cells on a worksheet. Here's a screen shot. You can drag the Stock Connector out of the pane and it will float.

Thanks Jim, but it does not work for me in Excel 2016 for Mac.

When I try to open an iqy file I get an error saying that the file is not in the correct format. This same file works fine in Excel 2011 for Mac (and in all versions of Excel for Windows, starting with 2003).

BTW, in this thread http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/mac/forum/macoffice2016-macexcel/web-query-for-mac-2016-excel-not-working/e97dd8b8-7104-4466-96dc-a41077fd724e  user DavidJenningsMac said he confirmed with Microsoft Support that iqy format in Excel 2016 for Mac is no longer the same.

Excel for Mac 2016 (the Office 360 client):

Allows to make web query data connections only to your own Office 360 OneDrive or SharePoint.

Does not support web query via .iqy files.

This is incorrect. I just tried making a .iqy file in Microsoft Word by following the instructions referred to earlier on my web site. I used Data > Get External Data > Run Saved Query on my custom .iqy file in Excel 2016 and the expected result set was returned to Excel in a querytable.

The MSN and Yahoo examples on my page are out of date and don't work, but web query from .iqy does work in Excel 2016 if the web query itself is valid.
