Display Issues and Excel Bugs

Similar to case http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/office/forum/office_2013_release-word/office-2013-bug-report/a33186f1-0b49-4afb-b52c-0a64da208d2c I was having display issues with Office 2013 Professional in Windows 7 Enterprise.

Outlook and Excel would often not display correctly when restored from minimized.

I think I have solved this issue by increasing

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows]

"GDIProcessHandleQuota"=dword:00004650

"USERPostMessageLimit"=dword:00004650

"USERProcessHandleQuota"=dword:00004650

from 10000 to 18000 as above.

I would like to know the maximum values I could set without trashing my system.

Now, I have a couple of remaining issues with Excel:

  1. Occasionally, Excel does not display the Minimize/Maximize/Close buttons in the Title Bar correctly...
  2. Occasionally, I cannot close Excel Workbooks using the Close button in the Title Bar or the Close Button in the Task Bar icon, and the only way to close the workbook is to actually go File/Close...
  3. Occasionally, I cannot edit a Cell in a Workbook...

I click the cell I want to edit, and try to type: nothing...

I try to click into the Formula Bar: cannot...

I try to click in the cell itself to in-cell editing: cannot...

and when I hit the Enter key, Excel switches me to a different open Workbook... ???

I then minimize the Workbook I was switched to, and all of the editing functions are restored for a couple of edits,

and then it goes the same again...

Loop...

  1. Occasionally, I can click in the cell itself to in-cell editing and can edit the content of the cell, but when I press the Enter key , Excel switches me to a different open Workbook... ???

I then minimize the Workbook I was switched to, and the changes I made to the contents of the cell have been lost, but all of the editing functions are restored for a couple of edits,

and then it goes the same again...

  1. When this Edit failure occurs, I cannot Copy or Cut and Install Cut Cells... but when I press the Enter key , Excel switches me to a different open Workbook... ???

I then minimize the Workbook I was switched to, and the changes I made to the contents of the cell have been lost, but all of the editing functions are restored for a couple of edits,

and then it goes the same again...

Clearly not the desired behavior...

I demonstrated all of these issues to a Microsoft Answer Desk Tech, but no follow-up or answer from them...

    None of the above...

    I am not in 'Touch Mode'

    Excel does not crash, hang, freeze, or stop working, or not respond... it responds by switching workbooks when I am trying to edit the contents of a cell...

    I have all the latest updates from Microsoft Updater for Windows 7 and Office 2013

    COM Add-Ins enabled are OffCAT, Send to Bluetooth, WebEx Productivity Tools and something from the Chinese Language Pack (Chinese Input Tool), so I removed all except OffCAT. (Not relevant)

    The only significant issue identified by OffCAT was that I had Hardware Acceleration disabled.

    It also showed that I had the update from KB 3114717 installed, so I uninstalled it...

    I have plenty of Memory and SwapFile available.

    I think it is a Bug in Excel...

    You didn't answer my first question on the best values for

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows]

    "GDIProcessHandleQuota"

    "USERPostMessageLimit"

    "USERProcessHandleQuota"

    Changing these values from the default 10000 resolved the biggest issue which prevented Excel, Oultlook and Word from displaying properly. I knew about these Keys from way back in WinXP and Win2k days. I wonder why they are still set to default 10000 in Win7?

    Hello,

    Welcome to Microsoft Community.

    Do you have the touch mode enabled in Excel 2013? If yes, you may disable the touch mode in Excel 2013 and check if it works.

    Check in the Quick Access Toolbar (QAT) if you have activated the Touch mode and are not working anymore on the Mouse mode.

    If yes, you may disable the Touch Mode by activating the Mouse mode.

    You may refer to the steps shown in the following Microsoft Article about how to turn off the Touch mode and activate Mouse mode:

    https://support.office.com/en-us/article/Turn-Touch-Mode-on-or-off-90E162B1-44F9-434F-BC2B-9321C989EA6E

    Check the above steps help.

    If not then you may follow the steps suggested in the following Microsoft Article:

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2758592

    Hope the above steps help.

    Thank you.
