Page numbers not showing up

I am working with a multisection document in Word, and I have followed instructions for inserting page numbers in the Footer.  I created a Table of Contents which shows the page numbers, but the page numbers do not show up in the document---either on screen or when printed.  Where are they?? How do I make them visible?  Thanks.

You have to insert the page numbers into the header or footer. You can double-click the header to activate the header/footer view, click where you want the page number, and finally press Alt+Shift+P (which is the default shortcut that inserts a page number field).

Thank you.  That's what I ended up doing after searching for an answer through Google after I'd posted here.  I had done all the steps but the Alt-Shift-P.  I've never had to do that before to insert page numbers, so I'm not sure why I did with this document, but it did fix the problem.

Sorry, maybe I wasn't clear.  The page numbers show up in the Table of contents but not on the actual pages themselves.  I think I've fixed it now somehow.  Thank you for responding.

Do I understand correctly that it's the page numbers that should appear in the Table of Contents that are missing? If so, it's possible that the tab stop for the page numbers is set to a value larger than the distance from the left margin to the right edge of the paper.

This can happen if the page layout is changed after the TOC is created -- for example, if you inserted the TOC while the orientation was landscape, and then you changed the document to portrait. I suppose there are some less "normal" glitches that could cause the same effect.

Try clicking in the TOC and clicking References > Table of Contents again, choosing the same kind of TOC as before. The replacement might behave properly.
