SharePoint/PowerPoint Training and Upload Difficulties

Hello, All,

I am creating a training via PowerPoint for my employer and have three issues of concern that I will state shortly after a brief description.

This training will be saved as a PPT Macro-Presentation. At the very end of this training, there is a completion certificate that I created for employees to save, open, and fill out their name and date. Note also that the only interactive buttons in the PPT are the "PREVIOUS" and "NEXT" buttons that I created to hyperlink to and from the next and current slides.

My boss and I tested this training the other day on our company's SharePoint site and we ran into some issues that seem to be specifically relevant to the PPT's upload to SP. I am not sure if this is a PPT issue, or a SP issue.

I think SP stripped the macros associated with the PPT, but employees would be able to move back and forth between slides without using the designated buttons. This is the first issue of concern.

The second issue of concern is that the PPT is no longer going straight to presentation mode when it is opened in SP. Instead, the PPT is being opened in another webpage, although not in presentation mode there either.

The third issue of concern is that the certificate is now not downloading at all. In the last slide of the PPT, I created a hyperlink in the phrase "click here to retrieve your certificate". This certificate was stored in the same place as the training in SP (and yes, the hyperlink is for the correct location of the certificate).

Any input is appreciated! Thank you for your time!

Best,

NC

    Hi Nichole,

The option I mentioned in my previous reply only applies through clicking the file via the document library.

In case of sharing with a restricted link or guest link, it will always open in Office Online.

As a workaround, may I suggest putting all your PowerPoint training files in one document library and sharing it to employees. They will then be able to click the PowerPoint training file and open it directly in PowerPoint. They will also be able to download it so that it will open in presentation mode straight away.

Another workaround is to modify a restricted link. Normally, a restricted link looks like this:

    https://xxx.sharepoint.com/sites/teamsite3/Shared%20Documents/Presentation.pptx?d=w207e1edcebe34ba8a27bebc4f06cc09c

However, if you take away the numbers behind pptx, a notification will pop up asking if you want to open the presentation. This will result in PowerPoint directly opening the file on your computer.

The end result of the URL will look this this:

    https://xxx.sharepoint.com/sites/teamsite3/Shared%20Documents/Presentation.pptx

Note: This will only work with Internet Explorer, and the person using the link will need an account that has access to that document.

If my workarounds does not fit your requirements, given the situation, we suggest you submit your feedback via UserVoice; this is the best way to influence our products and services to make it better for you and others.

    Regards,

    Sheen

    Hi Nicole,

The second issue you mention is related to a setting that SharePoint has.

By default, Office documents are opened using online applications.

Please try opening the PPT using the PowerPoint client via SharePoint.

You can do this by right-clicking the file > Open > and select Open in PowerPoint.

If you wish to change the default settings for how SharePoint opens documents, go to the Library tab on the top left corner of the page > Library Settings.

Under Advanced settings > Opening Documents in the Browser > set it to Open in the client application.

Regarding your first concern, the reason the macro may not be working is because you were using PowerPoint Online and it does not support running macros.

Please try opening the file using the PowerPoint client and see if the issue persists.

Regarding your third concern, I've tested using a .ppsm file (Macro-enabled show) which, if opened directly from a PC, will straight away open in Presentation mode. I have tested opening this file type using Open > Open with PowerPoint, and it will still open the file in normal mode.

Please confirm the information above; if there are any incorrect information feel free to clarify so that we can test the behavior further.

    Regards,

    Sheen

    Sheen,

This was extremely helpful! However, I am getting reports that the problem still persists.

When I generate a shareable link in SP, and other parties click on that link to access the training, it is opening in their browser, even after changing the setting to the client application.
