what are .bk and Bkup Document Name files and are they able to be open - MS Word 2007

I am currently using Word 2007 and having the saving option as automatic in the background.

I have some Word 2007 documents that I have been working on.

I have had my Word documents crash a few times and also reopened and repaired in the past two days.

This now has created .bk files and Bkup Document Name.

How are these files created - are they same as other back up documents?

I am only new to computers and have never seen these documents and now how to open them to retrieve my information.

This is what I am seeing on my desktop - they contain data as I see it in the extension

BK files are created when you open an existing WBK file, make a change and save it. Essentially a backup of a backup.

If you have enabled the Word option to "Always create backup copy" (Office Button | Word Options | Advanced: Save) , then you will see files named "Backup of <filename>.wbk." The first time you save a Word document, you get only a .docx file, but the second time you save, the previous version is saved as a .wbk file. Each time you save thereafter, the previous version replaces the existing .wbk file so that you always have only one .docx file (the current version) and one .wbk file (the previous version).

The option to "Save AutoRecover information every x minutes" (Office Button | Word Options | Save) creates the .asd files. These are timed saves (true backups) of the current version. They are deleted when the file or Word is closed normally but are presented when you restart Word after a hang or crash.

Thank you for your reply again.

I am looking at the file names and I am also having issues with the file name being too long and moving it to a file. So I have many issues.

What are the properties of the .wbk and .asd files?

Can you gather or open Word documents in any of them?

    Thank you

Never heard of .bk or bkup files created by Word.

Only ones that word creates are .wbk and .asd files.
