You can do it any number of ways.

    The simplest is:

    • open File Explorer, shortcut <WIN><E>
    • navigate to the folder where the file is located
    • single click on it
    • press <F2>
    • type the new name
    • press <enter>

You can do a variation of that process directly in Word as long as the file is NOT open.  Open the File Open dialog (which is a specialized version of the File Explorer), single click, <f2>,change name, press enter.

In addition to this procedure, you can also:

    1. In any Explorer window (File Explorer or Word's Openor Save dialog), click on the name twice (not a double-click), which will open it for renaming, or
    2. Select the name, right-click (or press the context menu key on the keyboard), and choose Rename.

In addition to what Suzanne and Rohn have said, if you are saving the document to OneDrive, you have to open the OneDrive folder that contains your file, right-click the file and choose the rename command.
