There is no "upgrade", just "full" versions of 2016.  So you simply uninstall 2010 and install 2016. The normal uninstall through "Programs and Features" will leave behind configuration files like normal.dotm and similar registry entries.  When 2016 is installed, it will pick up on this information and use it.

This page has uninstall instructions if you need more details

    Uninstall Office 365 / 2016 / 2013 / 2010 / 2007

Why do you want to "upgrade" to 2016? Do you NEED any of the new functions in 2013 or 2016?  Or is that you simply have money to burn?

You have to identify the specific new features you want to use.

There (still) is a lot of confusion about the differences between "Office 365" and "Office 2016" licenses.

The current version of Office is 2016. The applications have a number of new features compared to 2010.   There still are one-time payment licenses for Office 2016 bundles like the ones offered in 2010.   MS has also created (in 2013) a new way of getting Office. They created the "Office 365" subscription s**m.  Of course it costs us more money, but they added a bunch of "features" that are not part of the one-time payment bundles to "encourage" people to switch to 365.

The main extra features are that 365 includes 1TB of "free" OneDrive space (instead of the 5GB you can get free).  It also includes 60 minutes of free Skype time.  As well MS has promised to periodically add extra new features to the specific applications. These additional "new features" will not be added to one-time payment Office 2016 applications.  For example, in 365 Excel has a new chart type and 6 new functions.

Here is a link to MS ongoing blog (eventually) listing the "new features" as they are released.  I see that today they (FINALLY) updated the blog to include the June new features (they are "*casual"*about updating the blog):

Here is a link to the MS Store page that has a chart comparing the base features of the consumer Office 365 vs Office 2016 bundles:

365 is a subscription license and provided any subscription is renewed the version of office is updated automatically if/when any new version is released

The 365/2016 components are the same as the 2016 lifetime

    Hi Rohn

I've been using Office 2010 Pro since 2012 and find it to be excellent. I heard that if you want to use some of the features in Office 2016 you have to be subscribed to Office 365 is this true?
