Conflict between Windows Installer and Click-to-Run editions

Anonymous
2015-11-28T14:53:00+00:00

Hello,

my name is Konstantin.

My University has DreamSpark subscription, due to this I can download and install Visio 2016 and Access 2016. Along with this I have installed Office 2013 pack (Word, Excel, Power Point, Hotmail, OneNote, Publisher).

Recently I tried to upgrade to Office 2016 from Office 2013. But I faced up with the following problem. Exception, that is thrown during the installation told me, that Windows Installer and Click-to-Run editions do not go along. To solve this problem I need to delete already installed Visio 2016.

My Office plan does not include Visio, but I need both of them.

Any ideas?

There is a partial clarification of this issue. It is documented in the following link and extract from it:

Supported scenarios for installing different versions of Office, Visio, and Project on the same computerDifferent Years and MSI vs CTR.

https://technet.microsoft.com/library/mt712177%28v=office.16%29.aspx?f=255&MSPPError=-2147217396

This is an EXCELLENT resource.

Starting on October 11, 2016, Office 2013 software that uses Click-to-Run can be installed on the same computer with Office 2016 software that uses Click-to-Run.

We can also Use the Office Deployment Tool to install volume licensed editions of Visio 2016 and Project 2016 .

Note:  The MAK keys currently available on the Volume Licensing Service Center (VLSC) aren’t compatible with this specific installation scenario. We’re working on a solution, but we currently don’t have a date when we expect the solution to be available. KMS activation is available.

Yes there is a new known issue like that. MS has added a "new feature" to the 2016 CTR installer. It does not like you to have any previous versions of Office applications installed.  But you should be able to have both 365/2016 and Visio installed.

Take a look at these links and see if they cover your problem:

Office 2016 and standalone Office 2013 applications (purchased separately via a retailer and not part of a suite of applications) cannot be installed on the same device. To resolve this issue, you’ll need to upgrade your standalone applications to the Office 2016 version of the products. Please contact the Microsoft Answer Desk to obtain a free upgrade for your qualifying standalone applications.

This offer is subject to the following terms and conditions:

  • Offer expires June 30, 2016.

Yay..today they finally sent me my link to Visio and Project 2016.

You do have to persevere. It took me about ten tries over 5 days with the answer desk online chat before they escalated it. Within 48 hrs they called and emailed me the links.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tbfIHR_52do At the 32 minute point of this video they BRAG about being able to do a side-by-side installation of CTR 2013 beside 2010.  The new limit in the CTR 2016 installer is “artificial”.  CTR technology is supposed to isolate the programs inside of the CTR from those outside!  2016 CTR has broken this feature!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TNHyHnedY4E - At the 3 minute point of this video he shows the XML required to add Visio and Project to a Pro Plus 365 2016 CTR installation he is customizing

What can I do about this?

If you have a Microsoft Account associated with one of the products in the left column of the following table, and own one of the standalone applications in the right column of the table, you can contact the Microsoft Answer Desk for a free upgrade to these standalone applications.

Process for Free Upgrade to Visio 2016

https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/office/forum/office_365hp-visio/office-2016-uninstalls-my-visio-2013/11954b21-d1bd-42ce-82b2-d3178ae00ca6

Good News:  I now have a free upgrade to a perpetual license of Visio 2016.  So I’m eating my words.  MS did the honorable thing.  My sincere apologies to Bill.

Bad News:  Office 2013 is fundamentally incompatible with 2016 and it does not look like it ever will be.

Here’s the process that (finally) worked.

  • Tech support called me back and 90min later I have a free upgrade.  The (only) number that worked was 866-452-4755.
  • I worked with Pankaj
  • I had to allow remote access (make sure you create a restore point prior to doing this!!!!!)
  • I was assigned a case number.
  • Make sure that you expect them to call you back if you are disconnected
  • Oddly, I had to create an entirely new MS user account.  I have no idea why, but he said there was no other choice.  So, now I have two.
  • He assigned the free 2016 Visio Standard license to my new account.
  • If you’ve installed the free trial of Visio 2016 (as I did), you do not need to uninstall first.  The new install overwrites it.
  • Once installed, you can use your old MS account.  The new account is necessary only for the new perpetual license.

Good luck everyone.  I suspect the free upgrades will only apply to those willing to go through this process in the immediate future.  I do not see this as sustainable in that I can get a license of 2013 Visio for $100 now that the new 2016 version is out for $300.  So my advice is to move immediately.

**********

OK - my problem is now solved as well, but it took two hours on the phone explaining the situation to three different support people. Eventually, I had to install a remote management tool on my PC and he then emailed me a link that added an activated version of Visio 2016 Pro to my MS account. I installed it, and the problem is solved. No charge. He said that a new fix was being developed that would be more effective than requiring every angry Visio or Project user to spend hours on the phone. I suppose that’s a good idea.

Along the way, he shared this internal MS document with me:

Description: Office 365 subscribers who upgrade to Office 2016 AND have Visio or Project 2013 on their PC will get a warning message that indicates Visio and/or Project will be removed before they install. If they continue with the upgrade, they lose the 2013 product.

This applies to any of these Visio or Project SKUs:

• Visio Standard 2013

• Visio Professional 2013

• Project Standard 2013

• Project Professional 2013

Make It Right: Provide a free replacement Project/Visio 2016 version of the perpetual key to resolve the issue. --------------------------------------

Hopefully this will help others in the same situation to resolve this problem, which never should have occurred in the first place.

Let me see if I can explain what’s happening here.

Our Click-to-Run technology has a limitation where multiple versions of it (2013 and 2016) cannot exist on the same computer. So, when Office is upgraded to 2016, the 2013 versions of Visio and Project become incompatible. We have a solution within Support for that. The issue is documented here: https://support.office.com/article/-We-need-to-remove-some-older-apps-error-a225347f-e102-4ea6-9796-5d1ac5220c3b

When you contact Support, let them know you are upgrading your Office 2013 subscription to 2016 and are getting a message that Visio or Project needs to be removed. The support agents are being reminded of this situation and how to resolve it.

Things to Know Before installing 2016 Preview - 2016 beside earlier versions

http://www.askvg.com/microsoft-office-2016-preview-available-for-download/

<snip>

Although we were able to install Office 2016 Preview side-by-side with Office 2013 and we can run both versions (2013 as well as 2016) of all Office programs at the same time. I think if you installed previous Office version using Click-To-Run (C2R) installer, you can’t install Office 2016 side-by-side. But if you installed previous Office version using offline ISO image or setup disc, you’ll be able to install Office 2016 side-by-side with it.

14 October 2015

Microsoft has a very limited offer for anyone who has recently purchased Office 2013 for Windows or Office 2011 for Mac.

This only applies to anyone who bought the ‘perpetual licence’ version of Office, not the annual payment Office 365 plan.

To qualify you must have activated one of these products between 22 Aug and 31 Dec 2015:

  • Office Home and Student 2013
  • Office Home and Business 2013
  • Office Professional 2013
  • Office for Mac Home and Student 2011
  • Office for Mac Home and Business 2011

Note that it’s the activation date that matters, not the purchase date.

If you qualify you get the choice of:

  • One year Office 365 Personal subscription

OR

  • US$40 off the price of the equivalent Office 2016 product.

So, not very generous at all.  A far cry from the days of the ‘Technology Guarantee’ with free or very low cost upgrades.  Also, another little push towards paying an annual fee for Office.

There may be similar offers in other countries, check with the local Microsoft office.  If they don’t know what you’re talking about, refer them to the company’s own web page.  A common evasion tactic by Microsoft local offices is to say an offer is only for the USA … don’t accept that and ask why the offer isn’t available, just as Office software and Office 365 is.

How to Claim?

The details of this offer is on a single Microsoft page.  To claim it seems you have to go to the Microsoft Answer Desk (the latest name for their support site) and the ‘Accounts and billing’ section.

Problem is, there’s no ‘Accounts and billing’ link on that page (in fact the word ‘Accounts’ doesn’t appear at all).

Good luck trying to make a claim on this Office 2016 offer.  Finding the right people at Microsoft is another, unstated, condition.

I just ran into this and here is the workaround. Uninstall office 365 2016 and do the following. Start the office 365 install and the Visio 2016 msi install at the same time.

Works like a champ. I was able to install the license key in visio and have office 365 running at the same time.

    I totally agree with Rohn007.

MS chose not to make these two version co-exist on a system.

That's just plain evil and a big fat finger to their customers.

Do they have any idea how many people are confronted with this issue, forcing them to spend an hour or so uninstalling and reinstalling components?

    Microsoft, FIX THIS STUPIDITY ALREADY!

How hard is it to make this Windows Installer and Click to Run stuff work together?

How hard is it to segregate your Office suite to be modular!!!???

Our users have to uninstall Office to get updated Skype4Biz, or Access runtime.. they see Office installations when they just install Skype4Biz..  so stupidly awful!!!!
