Hi,

I have installed successfully Office 16 but I cannot activate it on my PC (Windows 10 version 1607 with the cumulative update KB3194496).

I have an Office 365 Education Plus license.

I try to start any of the installed office products (using run as administrator) and enter my credentials on the Activate Office dialog but I get error "Sorry, we ran into a problem while trying to install the product key. If this keeps happening you should try repairing your office product (System error: 0x80070005)".

I have tried repairing office from the displayed dialog and also the control panel numerous times. I have also re-installed office numerous times but to no avail.

I also tried the command cscript ospp.vbs /act with the output shown below.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office16>cscript ospp.vbs /act

    Hi Neophytos,

From your description, I noticed that, after deleting the product key, you don’t reboot the computer to activate Office as Jim mentioned in Step 4. Therefore, please perform the step4 with the command and active it again after rebooting the computer to check the result.

If the issue persists, could you confirm the following details?

    1. To trouble if the issue is caused by the old version of Office, please run the ROIScan.vbs tool to collect the ROIScan.log file. Then, share with it with us for your further investigation. I have sent you a private message to collect the information. You could check and respond to it via https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/privatemessages/list.
    2. Could you share with us a screenshot about your current licenses? To check it, please go to the subscription page: https://portal.office.com/account/#subscriptions .

    Regards,

    Shirley

Hi Jim and many thanks for your reply,

Using Office 16, I tried all the steps you mentioned in your reply (except step 4) without success (same error). I then noticed in my educational account that there was an option to install Office 365 ProPlus with the 2013 apps (Office 15). I tried to install that version (after I cleaned the Office 16 version using  https://support.office.com/en-us/article/Uninstall-Office-2013-Office-2016-or-Office-365-from-a-PC-9dd49b83-264a-477a-8fcc-2fdf5dbf61d8). I also performed an online repair of Office 15 through the control panel.

I then tried the activation process and I got the same error (0x80070005).

For the Office 15 installation, cscript ospp.vbs /dstatus reports 2 keys with the last 5 characters being G8X9C and VMFTK (the second key was also reported with the Office 16 installation as I mentioned in my initial post).

I used your proposed step 4, to delete both product keys in sequence. After the key deletion, retried the activation by starting an office application (with administrator rights) which failed with the same error (0x80070005).

I then tried cscript ospp.vbs /act which gave the output shown below. The issue seems to be with the second key (ending in VMFTK) which was also present in the Office 16 installation. The first key was deleted and re-activated successfully.

I am also curious about the purpose of the second key (it points to a "grace edition license" while there is an active key with a "subscription edition license").

I also downloaded and tried to run the Support and Recovery Assistant for Office 365 (without success though as it seems my educational institution is not supported). Any ideas how to debug further this? I also wonder whether there is any other way to activate Office e.g. somehow generate a key from my educational subscription account and enter that manually in the activation dialog?

    Hi InspireNeo,

To investigate the issue, I'd like to share the following information:

    1. Please make sure there's no other version of Office installed on your PC which may cause confliction.
    2. Here is an article for your reference:

Office error code 0x80070005 when activating Office

You can update Office, run Office as an administrator to give it a shot.

    1. Follow this guide which contains various troubleshooting steps:

Unlicensed Product and activation errors in Office

    1. You can use cscript ospp.vbs /unpkey:xxxxx command (xxxxx = the last 5 characters of installed product key) to delete the product key, reboot your PC and try to activate it again.

    Thanks,

    Jim
