I have actually discovered that it is possible, and you don't need to subscribe to Office 365!

You need to generate the pdf by going to 'Save As' and choosing 'pdf' from the 'file formats' menu at the bottom.

Below 'file format' you then need to select 'Best for electronic distribution and accessibility' and that will retain all the links.

If only Microsoft would give some instructions when they issue upgrades and change things! Some hope, eh!

This uses the MS online file oconversion service, which lowers images quality in documents, especially technical images with fine details and small fonts.

I hope MS allows the users to choose the images quality (compression level) when using this feature.

YEs, If I print as PDF with Word built in PDF printer - then IMAGE QUALITY IS AMAZING and file size is say 30mB! Cool, but no hyperlinks there.....:(

IF I save as pdf and use the option for "Create Bookmarks using headings" - I have the hyperlinks working BUT Image quality is BAD!!! :( and size of pdf is only 6Mb !!

Microsoft Sucks here and needs to be fixed!

The biggest mystery is why they don't summarise for their customers the changes they've made, even when they're good ones. How do they expect most of their customers to ever find out how the thing works??

For this to work, you must be a Subscriber to the Office365 Subscriber version of Word 2016.

    1. First, save as a regular Word document as a Backup. (docx) or as a macro enabled version).
    2. Second, go to Save As and choose export as PDF.

    You will see two choices:

Using the first option goes to a special website that makes sure links work.

Since the second option is intended for a printed copy the links will be in blue and are underlined, but links don't necessarily link. 3. You have the permanently licensed version, you'll have to have some type of Application capable of saving in PDF; such as, Acrobat, PDFpenPro, or possibly  TextEdit or Preview. Then go to Print Menu. Click on the PDF Button and Select Appropriate Choice.
