presenting page numbers in a chosen font, size, and color

I use MS Word for Mac 2011 [version 14.6.8].  Older versions of MS Word made it possible – and very simple – when creating headers and footers, to choose the font, size, and color of the page numbers to match the chosen title[s] of the header and/or the footer.

How does one now choose to match the font, size, and color of the page numbers to match the chosen title[s] of the header and/or the footer?

To change the page number appearance, alter the Page Number style:

    1. In Word, choose Format>Style... from the OS X menu bar at the top of the screen.
    2. By default the List: is set to Styles in Use. If you document already has a page number, the Page Number style should already be visible, select it. If it is not, change List: to All Styles, scroll down to Page Number and select it.
    3. Click on the Modify button.
    4. If you want this change to apply to all future documents, check the option for Add to template.
    5. Click on the Format button and choose Font...
    6. Set the font, size and color. OK out.

    Hi, John –

'A much belated hearty thank-you for your excellent solution to my question of now more than eight months ago.

Your method works perfectly.  Unfortunately, however, it's more complicated to change the page number color than it was for many years in the past.  Sometimes when the Microsoft software engineers change things, they make them more complicated than they need be.

    'Thanks again,

    Ralph Wilcoxen
