How do I convert Works documents to Word 2016 format?

I have several documents which I urgently need to convert to Word 2016. I believe they were originated in Microsoft Office 2003, but not absolutely sure of this. I see that someone has previously suggested going to http://www.gmayor.com/downloads.htm I am a little nervous of doing this but maybe this is my only option. If I take this route would the appropriate download be Works converters for Word?

Help please!

After trying ALL the suggestions in this community AND nothing working, I took  a gamble and called Microsoft Support AGAIN.  This time, I spoke to SABIYA IKRAM, who remotely took over my computer, and found the solution.

She connected to FileHippo, downloaded the converter, and Voila, I was able to convert my Vista Works .wps files and read them in Word and save them as docx file.

    Here's the website

    http://filehippo.com/search?q=Microsoft+Works+6%E2%80%939+File+Converter

Scroll down to the following and click download:

    !\[\](http://cache.filehippo.com/img/ex/6553__microsoft_works_6_9_file_converter_icon_converted.png)Microsoft Works 6–9 File Converter

    Download

    Microsoft - 1.41MB (Freeware)

The Microsoft Works 6–9 File Converter allows you to open, edit, and save documents in the Works Word Processor file format supported by Works versi...

The file automatically downloads into the Word start file, so it's VERY, VERY EASY!!

Sabiya, you are a support goddess!!

If they were created with Word 2003, then they are not Works documents. They will have a .doc file extension, and you should be able to open them in Word 2016 without issue. If they actually are Works documents, they will have a .wps file extension, and again, unless they were created in a very early version of Works, Word 2013 should open them with no problem (Word 2016 has converters for documents from Works versions 6-9). It is only if they are documents from an older version of Works that you would need the converters from Graham's site.

One of the MOST frustrating things about consulting with people within the Microsoft community is that many have opinions of what to do to correct a problem, but few suggestions ever work. This is mostly due to lack of technical expertise or formal training AND lack of knowledge about all the MS product out there (my version of MS Office 365 - Word did NOT have the Works 6-9 converter built into it apparently). There also seems to be a great reluctance to put a hyperlink into advice to show people where to find the solution/drivers/exe file, etc....

Respectfully, much of the advice here is on the weak side. The lack of a link to the WorksConv.exe file was frustrating as heck. The link that other moderators provided to Hippo Files ... well, that is a blatant effort by a scammer/spammer to get people to sign up to Hippo files... it is not legit. I would ask, if you are legitimately trying to help, make the effort to provide links to solutions that you know of on an approved Microsoft webpage. The WorksConv.exe file does not seem to exist at MS Support anymore. The WorksConv.exe was/is a freeware file that Microsoft provided to fix a problem... but it too seems to be gone from MS sites at this time. You should NOT have to sign up for HippoFile in order to get it; so beware bad advice.

As of September 23, 2016 the only free download I have located of WorksConv.exe can be found at ComputerHope website - a free computer help and info website: http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch001017.htm . I am not endorsing this website - but at least it seems run by experienced folks that understand the need for others to access certain files, so I am willing to give it my tacit approval (slight nod of approval with further inspection of the site to follow). It is paid for through commercial advertising on the top/bottom of the page.

This website provides a link at the top of the page to a commercial product to convert files from one format to another. I did NOT use it. It is totally up to you if you wish to purchase it. If you SCROLL DOWN and read the narrative, you will find the link for WorksConv.exe within the text... or click this link to go directly to it: (http://www.computerhope.com/download/utility/WorksConv.exe )

The program worked for me and was virus-free according to my AVS - I am using Windows 10 and MS Office/Word 2016. It was a quick and seemless install.

Note that the Downloads section of MVP Graham Mayor's site includes the Works converter:

Thanks for your help. The documents in question all have a .wps file extension but as I have no idea when they were created will start with converters for Works versions 6-9 and then work backwards. Wish me luck!
