Cell Protection Excel Online

Using Office 365 I have a SharePoint site with a library and files set to open in browser to allow co-authoring. Excel file is being edited very easily using 'Edit in Excel Online'. Challenge is I need to prevent certain cells being edited. I can protect these cells in normal Excel but then Excel Online fails to open. I suspect there is a way to do this on Excel Online that I am missing.

Any suggestions welcome.

Hi Andy,

Thanks for your updates.

Just as I suggest in the last post, we need to open the workbook in desktop Excel first, then lock cells and protect the sheet. After finishing above, we are restricted to editing the protected cells. However, we can edit other unlocked cells in Excel Online.

Besides, we encourage you share your experience after Edit Range approach works as this will benefit other community members who have the same question.

Regards,

Yoga

    Hi Andy,

    Thanks for your updates.

My previous post is about giving users permission to edit ranges that you allow for editing. If you would like to lock several cells, I suggest you follow the steps below. In this case, users cannot edit the cells in Excel Online.

    1.    Open the workbook in Excel.

    2.    Select all cells, right click and select Format Cells.

    3.    On the Protection tab, uncheck the Locked check box and click OK.

    4.    Select the cells you would like to lock, right click and select Format Cells.

    5.    On the Protection tab, check the Locked check box and click OK.

    6.    Protect the sheet.

    a.    Go to Review> click Protect Sheet.

    b.    Enter a password and check the actions you allow the users of your worksheet to perform.

    c.    Confirm the password and click OK.

    Regards,

    Yoga

No Yoga, the first option is right I want to limit the range of cells they can edit.

Protect Sheet and Lock cells is not supported in Excel Online. This was my challenge.

I am confident the Edit Range approach will work.

    Thanks,

    Andy

    Hi Andale1982,

You can  give users permission to edit ranges that you allow for editing. Please refer to the steps below. For more detailed information, you can refer to this article.

    1.    Open the file in Excel Online, and select to Edit the workbook in Excel.

    2.    On the Review tab select Allow Users to Edit Ranges in the Changes Group.

    3.    Click New and select cells range.

    4.    Click Permissions... > choose the group or people that are allowed to edit and select Allow.

    5.    On Allow Users to Edit Ranges page, select the range, and click Apply.

    6.    Click OK to save the setting and save your Excel Online Workbook.

Note: To give specific users permission to edit ranges, your computer must be running Microsoft Windows XP or later, and your computer must be in a domain. Instead of using permissions that require a domain, you can also specify a password for a range.

    Regards,

    Yoga
