In Microsoft Word, you can select "Design" and "Page color" and click on the color the color of the background that you want on the page. Everything works fine and the selected background color shows on the screen, however when I try to print the document it only prints the original document without changing the background color. Even the preview shows the original background. This is Word 2016 and Windows 10. ------------ Any suggestions???????? ------

File > Options > Display > Printing Options > Check 'Print background colors and images'. However I would suggest you don't do that for two reasons.

  1. Most printers are unable to print to the edge of the page and so you will get an unprinted border around the edge of the page, the width of which is determined by the printer driver.
  2. Printing backgrounds is very wasteful of ink/toner. Where possible, print on coloured paper instead.

Well, you did say, "Even the preview shows the original background," which I interpreted to mean that Print Preview was showing the background you wanted, so I was just checking.

Thanks for the reply Susanne, but the previous answer from Graham resolved my issue. The preview did NOT show the page in color but the print layout DID. Thanks again Susanne, ----- Davie

If you see the page color in Print Preview (actual Print Preview, not Print Layout view), then it should print, but it appears your printer may be doing you a favor: as Graham points out, there are good reasons not to print a page color; if this were a background (image or texture), it might be worth the trouble, though you probably still wouldn't be able to print full bleed.
