Setting an inline picture to lowered or raised font position and moving cursor next to image causes view to jump to beginning of document. Bug?

I can reproduce this in Word 2016 but it does not happen in Word 2007 (I haven't tried other versions)

Steps to reproduce:

  • Create a blank document
  • Insert 2 page breaks
  • Type in "1234" text in the third page
  • Insert an image just to the right of the text with its Wrap Text option set to "In Line with Text"
  • Click on the image to select it
  • In the Advanced tab of the expanded Font options window, set the font Position to either Lowered or Raised and click OK
  • Place cursor at the beginning of the line
  • Move cursor to the right using the Right Arrow key (or click between the "4" and the image)
  • When the cursor is between the "4" and the image, the document view jumps to the first page
  • Continuing to type inserts text next to the image but it occurs off-screen - the view does not jump to the cursor position
  • The only way to go to the cursor position is to scroll back to the location.

I have a document with a lot of small icon images place inline with text throughout many pages. I use the Lowered font option to center the icons vertically within the text lines but the above behavior makes working with the document a huge pain. I can't use floating images because I need them anchored between specific words within the lines.

I assume this is a bug and there is no workaround?

Thanks,

Alex

I have just done a full online repair following that article and the issue still occurs.

Note that this is a new installation of Office 2016 Home on a new installation of Windows 10 Pro (2 weeks old). Neither was an upgrade, they were both clean installs.

Also, given that Doug Robbins indicated he could reproduce the problem (somewhat), it indicates that this is a bug.

    Thanks,

    Alex

The up and down arrow keys trick does nothing for me. Once the document jumps, I have to manually scroll to get back to the page.

Also, typing in after the jump inserted the text in the top page, not where the image was. At least for me.

Edit: Actually, typing does put the text next to the image but the document does not jump back to that location. The result of the typing is off-screen.

Also, the up and down arrow keys may not do what you think they do for you either. Enter in several lines of text on the 1st and 2nd page (don't just have the page breaks) and you might find the same behavior as me (can't get back to the original page by using the arrows)

In my case, the document scrolled to the bottom of the third page.  Entering some more text to see where the selection was located, indicated that it was still between the 4 and the image.

Further playing around reveals that if the up arrow key and then the down arrow key are pressed, the document is scrolled back to the position in which it was and the selection is once more visible
