O365 login accounts display with @[company name].onmicrosoft.com suffix

When my users sign into an Office application with their O365 account, the account name displayed has the @[company name].onmicrosoft.com suffix rather than their primary email address/O365 UPN. I've switched the default domain in O365 to our company domain. How do I fix the incorrect domain suffix?

I tried removing the @[company name].onmicrosoft.com email aliases, but can't modify sync'ed user accounts in O365 Admin Center.

I've checked the proxyAddresses attribute for users in our on-prem AD and there is no reference to .onmicrosoft.com suffix.

How do I resolve this?

Thanks,

Fiona

    Hi Fiona,

If the users are synced from AD, you need to manage them in AD. Admins cannot manage them in Office 365 Exchange Admin Center.

Generally, you need to check some points:

    1.    Make sure your default domain is your custom domain. (you have done it.)

    2.    Go to the proxyAddresses attribute, you should see some smtp address. You need to make the custom domain as capital letters.

    For example:   SMTP: ******@contoso.com,

                  not the smtp: ******@contoso.com

    3.    After that, please run force sync manually.

If the issue persists, can you provide some information?

    1.    A screenshot of AD proxyAddresses attribute.

    2.    Any errors in MIISClient?

    3.    One screenshot of the all email addresses in EAC for one problematic user like the example below.

    Hi Fiona,

Thanks for your information in the private message. Generally, when we run AAD Connect, we will have a Directory sync service account like Sync_DC******@contoso.onmicrosoft.com. It is a normal behavior.

Since the SMTP address shows correctly and no errors in MIISClient, to further narrow down the issue, cloud you please provide the following information?

    1.    Does the issue occur for all users or only one user like your PowerShell shows in the private message?

    2.    When you mentioned “When my users sign into an Office application with their O365 account, the account name displayed has the @[company name].onmicrosoft.com suffix rather than their primary email address/O365 UPN.”, can you provide a screenshot for our analysis?

    3.    Meantime, may I know which Office app you use?

    4.    I noticed that you seem have a subdomain in MIISClient screenshot. Since it is related to your private information, I’d like to confirm some information in the private message. Please check the private message at your convenience.

    Best Regards,

    Erick
