Excel 15.31 crashes when trying to update links to external excel sheets using the Edit Links/Change Source options

I am on a MacBook Pro running the latest Mac OS Sierra with Excel version 15.31 (Office 365 Home).  I inherited a complex financial workbook that is linked to 3 external workbooks.  I was able to change the source on one of the workbooks, but not the other two.  The current link is listed as the other computer the workbook was created on, and when I use the "Edit Links" and "Change Source" options I can locate the file in its new location and select it, however it will not accept that giving an error message that Excel cannot find the file.  This file can be reselected with the same result.  The only way to exit the "Change Source" process is to use the cancel button, then Excel blows up and I get the dialogue box telling me Excel crashed.  I tried attaching the error report to this message but it is too big.  I have attached this from the end of the report:

I am hoping someone can help me, these are massive workbooks and to rebuild the links would be a pile of work I am not interested in doing.

Jiaxing -

I needed to get this resolved, so I ended up manually changing the formulas/links in the main workbook to the new locations of the source workbooks and now everything works fine.  When I did this the links shown in Data/Edit Source Links showed up as new links, and I deleted the old ones (broke the link).

Like I said everything is working fine now.

Thank you!

Tim

    Hi Tim,

    Thanks for your detailed information.

To further look into the issue, please confirm the following information:

    1. When changing the external link, choose a different Excel document to check the outcome.
    2. Create a new Excel document, and check if you can update link to the Excel document (Port Authority …) successfully.
    3. Check if the same issue happens in a different Mac user profile.

Meanwhile, I have sent you a private message to collect the crash report. You can access it via the link below:

    Jiaxing -

Thank you for the response, here are the details you requested.

First, here is the file structure I am working with, and the file that has the error is the "LGS 3YR Budget v9.1.xlsx":

I proceed to open the file, and select "ignore links" upon opening to allow the file to open cleanly.

Once in the file, I select "Data/Edit Links" to get to the following screen:

The first two links are the issue, the third link I was able to change and it works properly.  The first two links were created on a different computer, as you can see, and were built under Office for Mac 2011 (note I am using the current Office 365 Home version).  The first two files, however, have been opened and resaved using the current version of Excel and as a stand alone file work just fine.

Then I select either of the first two links and click on "Change Source":

On this screen, I select the proper file in the correct location on my computer, and then click "Change".  When I do that, I get the following error message stating the file cannot be found, despite the file actually being in that location:

Now the "Change" button changes to "Copy", which does not work either.  If you continue to select the file and click the "Copy" button I continue to get the "cannot find" dialogue box.

At this point the only way to exit this is to click "Cancel", which causes Excel to crash and brings up this dialogue box:

Please note, that other files with external links are working properly, as is the third link in the file I am working with (shared above).  If you would also like the "More Information" crash report please let me know and I will send that to you too.

Hopefully this is helpful and I look forward to your response.

    Hi Tim,

To better understand the situation, please share with us how the financial workbook is linked to 3 external workbooks and your detailed steps (with some related screenshots) to reproduce the issue.

Meanwhile, you can check if the issue also happens to a new workbook, and remove Excel preferences (refer to Step 2 in this article) to check the outcome.

    Regards,

    Jiaxing
