System Error 0x80070005 for Office 2016 Professional HUP (and also for Office 365 Home) x64 on Windows 10 Creators Update x64

Hi

I recently re-installed Windows 10 (first anniversary edition, then updated to Creators Update afterwards) and now I get the dreaded "Sorry, we ran into a problem while trying to install the product key. If this keeps happening, you should try repairing your office product. System Error 0x80070005)" pop-up when trying to active office.

I've tried:

  1. Quick repair
  2. Online repair
  3. Running Office (Word - but same issue for all applications) as administrator to see if that helps
  4. Uninstall and re-install
  5. The easy fix tool (https://support.office.com/en-us/article/Uninstall-Office-2016-Office-2013-or-Office-365-from-a-PC-9dd49b83-264a-477a-8fcc-2fdf5dbf61d8?ui=en-US&rs=en-US&ad=US&fromAR=1) to completely remove Office and then re-installing again.
  6. cscript OSPP.VBS /act (I saw this mentioned here: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/msoffice/forum/msoffice_install-mso_win10/issue-with-office-2016-on-windows-10/3543215c-036a-4f95-89e2-2d77960b14bd)

This was initially for Office 2016 Professional under the HUP. Thinking perhaps it didn't like the license key after the re-install, I also signed up for an Office 365 Home subscription to see if that worked. I uninstalled Office 2016 and installed Office 365 Home - and I hit the exact same issue. Obviously I've cancelled the subscription - it's still valid for a couple of weeks but will not renew.

Output from cscript OSPP.VBS /act:

It also shows this pop-up.

I would really prefer not to spend hours on the phone for this - and also prefer not to reinstall Windows given that I did that very recently.

[Note: This is regular Windows 10 Creators Update installed, not an insider preview or anything like that. ]

Hi

Thanks for the further suggestions! Unfortunately I was not able to access File -> Account because it was trying to activate before that was available.

In the end the following resolved rather heavy duty approach resolved it:

  1. Uninstalled Office (it was 365 Home I had been trying last), then rebooted.
  2. I used the media creation tool to create an ISO for Windows 10 Creators Update, then I mounted it and ran setup.
  3. Went through the Windows installation with the option to keep my files and apps. After the first login I rebooted again just in case.
  4. Installed Office 2016 Pro and entered the license key. This time it worked activated just fine.

Step 3 took quite a while but at least it's working now and I didn't have to re-install all my other applications. I still think the issue  installing Creators Update from Anniversary Edition. Office was already activated on Anniversary Edition and something must have gone wrong.

    Brendon,

We suggest that you update Office to make sure you have the latest fixes for activation errors. To update Office:

    1. Open any Office application, like Word or Excel.
    2. Click File > Account.
    3. Under Product Information, click Update Options > Update Now.

Note: If you don't see Update Now, click Update Options > Enable Updates to turn on automatic updates. After that, click Update Options > Update Now.

You may, also, run Office as an administrator to complete the activation. Running Office as administrator helps fix permission issues that might cause Office activation to fail. Follow the steps below to run Office as administrator:

    1. Close all Office programs.
    2. Press the Start button, type an Office application, like Word.
    3. Right-click the icon of the Office application, and select Run as administrator.
    4. Select Yes to allow Office to run as administrator.
    5. Attempt to reactivate Office by selecting the Reactivate button, or go to File > Account > Activate Product.

    Hi

    Thanks for the response.

There was no problem activating Windows 10. It was purchased for this machine.

As for Office 2016 Pro HUP, I entered the license key as per the link and I got the error mentioned in my questions.

Then I uninstalled Office 2016 Pro and installed Office 365 Home, which I activated via my Microsoft Account as I signed up for a subscription. This gave the same error.

(I won't repeat the rest of the details about the steps that I had tried mentioned in the question, but I tried the easy fix tool etc. to try and ensure it was completely uninstalled and then reinstalling etc. for both.)

    Hi Brendon,

How you activate Windows 10 after reinstalling it depends on how Windows 10 was originally installed on your device.

If you activated a free upgrade to Windows 10 or bought and activated Windows 10 from the Store, you have a digital license for your device. This means you may reinstall the same edition of Windows 10 that your device has a digital license for without entering a product key. During reinstallation, if you're asked to enter a product key, you may skip this step. Windows will automatically activate online after the installation is complete.

You may follow the steps here in Windows activation errors if you are having trouble activating Windows 10.

You may refer to this linkin installing and activating your Office HUP.

    Regards.
