    See:

BUT NOTE:  That is NOT an official Microsoft support site so just IGNORE the offers to Chat and be fleeced.

Doug's link appears to be broken, so I don't know what is suggested in the article.

    You can try the following:

    • Locate the winword.exe file by clicking the Windows logo on the taskbar and then type winword. In the list of search results, right-click Word 2013 (or winword.exe if that is what you see) and choose Open File Location from the context menu. In the File Explorer window that opens, right-click the winword.exe file and choose Troubleshoot Compatibility. Select the option to "Try recommended settings" and follow the steps, including the steps that perform tests. Once this procedure is completed, see if you can start Word without an error message.
    • Repair Office from Control Panel (choose the online repair option if available). See https://support.office.com/en-us/article/Repair-an-Office-application-7821d4b6-7c1d-4205-aa0e-a6b40c5bb88b.

    Hi Patrick,

This can occur when your shortcuts are broken for some strange reason.

To help you out with your Office concern, we suggest that you run Quick Repair option for your Office application.

Let us know how it goes.

    Best Regard.
