How to put an "umlaut" on a letter O or an A or a U

    Press and release Ctrl and the colon (including the Shift key), and then press the vowel.

    On the Insert tab of the ribbon, in the Symbols group, click Symbol > More Symbols...

    Make sure that the Font dropdown is set to (normal text).

    Scroll down the list of characters until you see accented upper case letters.

    Select the letter you want, then click Insert.

    You'll also see the keyboard shortcut that you can use.
