Install Run Time Access 2016 in Office 2013 (with access 2013 included)

Hi Guys,

I have office 2013 32 bit installed in my computer and need to open an ACCDE file (saved from access 2016). So I'm trying to use access 2016 run time because my company can't provide the newer version.

The problem is the package failed. ( i am using  accessruntime_4288-1001_x86_en-us)

my assumption so far is because the computer can't install software from outside my company even it is from Microsoft. My colleague said that my company has its own package for everything.

But still can't believe it since it's only a run time software.

Solution that i can think for now and currently working on it is save it or convert it into older version but seems no luck it says "u can't save it into earlier format because it uses require features in this format"

Any other solution?

Thank you in advance!

    Hi Fraser,

    Apologies for late response,

    • Which version of Access Runtime 2016 did you download, 32-bit or 64-bit? Please try different versions of Access Runtime 2016 to check the outcome.
    • I am using 64 bit, because the office is 64 bit.
    • Please try the run the installer with administrator permission.
      • Yes I did
    • Regarding “it is simply stated your packaging is failed.”, please share a screenshot of it with us.
      • because it was really stated only "packaging is failed". Can't share it because it's on my colleague's office desktop

I have come to conclusion that the problem is the packaging. As @Scottgem advised, I need a correct file packaging for this and I decided to downgrade the code since I might wasting a lot of time only to find out the solution.

I appreciate your best support Fraser!

    Thank you

    Hi Scottgem,

    Thank you for your reply,

First, you got mistaken advice. If you already have a full license of Access 2013 then DO NOT try to install the 2013 Runtime.

yes this is confusing me, because i think the reason why they make the run time is for this kind situation. It doesnt make any sense that I install the same version with my office. (why should I, right?)

The problem may be one of several. Since you indicate you have Office 365, you may have a C2R installation and the only version of 2016 runtime is MSI. they aren't compatible.

I actually dont have any idea about this, but will try to find the MSI. It's probably the problem.

You didn't tell us why the install failed, any error messages? That may help provide a clue.

it is simply stated your packaging is failed. No other clue.

Another question is did you try opening the accdb in 2013? The file format is same. there may be features used in the app that won't run under 2013, but it should be able to open.

"You require a newer database version"

Another suggestion is to install the 2016 runtime in a VM.

yeah, good idea. But the cont. this will consume lot resources and this access built to process huge data. I think might crashed a lot.

Also have you talked to your IT people. If the problem is that your desktop is locked down you will need their help to install anything.

Yes i have, and i didnt agree with their solution. They said in a brief, that you need to install the MS 2003 with personal account and I can do some "trick" with it.. I just dont think that's the solution. Because I still stick with this "run time" solution.

I tried to install this run time in my personal laptop. Which has 64 bit office 2013 and windows 7. After i double clicked the installer. It ran, extracting the installer. (which is better than my office laptop, it's not even extracting)  but after the extraction completed and wanted to start the installation voila.. "you need Windows 7 SP 1, Windows 10, Windows Server 2008 R2" (the requirement on the website only stated windows 10,7,8,server 2008 r2,server 2012)

Fine.. i downloaded the update.. again.. you need Windows 7 SP 1 bla bla.. lol..

    Hi Fraser Xu MSFT ,

Thank you for your reply, so basically, I can't use the newer version of run time. So how could I open the access file? it requires a newer version.

Or how to convert the 2016 accdb file to 2013? I have tried with 'save as' but it says  "u can't save it into earlier format because it uses require features in this format". I am ok if I could know which part of the features that i have to disable to make it compatible with 2013 version.

    Thank you!

    Hi Aegis,

It’s not feasible to install an Office 2016 component in Office 2013. Please install~~Microsoft Access 2013 Runtimeinstead. Thanks for your understanding.~~

Meanwhile, please note that support for the 2013 versions of Office 365 client applications ended on February 28, 2017. See: Support for 2013 versions of Office 365 ProPlus ends February 28, 2017.

    Regards

    Fraser
