All Microsoft Office 2007 icons became white (Windows 10)

I had MO XP and MO 2007 on my Win 10 and they worked perfectly. I decided to install 30-days trial of MO Pro Plus 2016 but didn't impressed and uninstalled it after the trial ended. During it's installation I checked "Keep all previous versions" and "Run all from My Computer" (which I do in ever MO installation). After MO Pro Plus 2016 uninstall the in-built Repair in both old versions didn't work so I needed to use CD for MO XP and ISO for MO 2007 to repair them. The programs were repaired yet all documents became with white icons. Additionally when closing a document I'm asked to install some language feature which installation closes the document.

I uninstalled MO Pro Plus 2016 with Revo (it used the in-built MO uninstaller). I didn't clean any leftovers because I was afraid of losing something from MO XP and MO 2007.

While I had MO Pro Plus 2016 I installed Adobe Acrobat DC which integrated in it and also in MO 2007.

Any help?

PS. Forgot to say that in same way a long ago, when I still was with Win 8.1, I lost the icon for HTML documents.

Now I installed 30-days trial of MO Pro Plus 2013 just to get things temporarily ok. But I really need a solution because I don't like MO Pro Plus 2013 either and won't buy it.

I forgot to say I had some .dll missing after Office 2016 removing and fixed that with Office XP install from original CD.

Strange, I have Acrobat DC integrated in 2016 and now in 2013 as well as in 2007. It appears as a new tab in the ribbon.

I didn't know there's MS tool for uninstalling. Is it possible you to post a link here?

After the uninstall of 2016 the repair of 2007 and XP didn't work. I needed to install them again yet the icons of the documents remained white. They didn't lost their association but only their look.

My only hope is that I could get back C:\Windows\Installer{91140000-0011-0000-0000-0000000FF1CE} as I don't see it listed in the folder.

What I need to do - just to make it manually and put MO 2007 icons there? I see folder {91150000-0011-0000-0000-0000000FF1CE} which has MO 2013 icons in it. Also shouldn't it be {911 20000-0011-0000-0000-0000000FF1CE} for MO 2007 as it's folder in Program Files is named Office 12 as MO 2013 is named Office 15, and the number in it's Installer subfolder is 15?

You are asking about folders created by install processes. That is something I have not messed about. Sorry, I can't help with that question.

Your question about version numbers is on point, 2007 is also known as V12 or Version 12.

    2010 is V14,

    2013 is V15

    2016 is V16

MS marketing superstitiously skipped "V13", only to have users commonly mis name Office 2013 "Office 13", misleadingly implying to technical users Version 13.

Thank you! I read this thread today and tried ‘Restore my shortcuts while repairing’ and changing default to another program (Open and Libre Office) and then returning to Office 2007. Also pin/unpin won't work as not the desktop shortcuts but documents lost their icons. I'm afraid of rebuilding the icon cache as I had issue with Win 10 update, my machine happened to be incompatible with update 1067 and froze for 11 hours. My only hope is that I could get back C:\Windows\Installer{91140000-0011-0000-0000-0000000FF1CE} as I don't see it listed in the folder. Here are some fixes for "white" icons

**Office Icons are all missing/replaced by generic white icons**

    http://answers.microsoft.com/thread/d9e13b4f-959b-48f4-b7f3-bc897c2fbad9

<snip> From the Start menu > open Microsoft Office folder-> open Microsoft Office 2010 Tools- folder > start Microsoft Office Picture Manager > Click Help  > select Detect and Repair > Select ‘Restore my shortcuts while reparing’ > click Start.

    • After this all my Office icons came back!  </snip>
    • <snip>
    • I had the same problem as described above.  The issue I found was the missing folders in C:\Windows\Installers.  The registry has references to these folders for the icons images and if you have any utilities that have deleted these files or folders, the icons will not appear correctly.
    • I restored these folders (e.g. - **C:\Windows\Installer{91140000-0011-0000-0000-0000000FF1CE} )**and the icons displayed correctly again.
    • </snip>

    **************************

    • <snip>
    • Rebuilding the icon cache did not work for me either. What did work was opening MS Office Tools --> Picture Manager --> Help --> Detect and Repair. Easy and all set.
    • </snip>

    **************************

    • <snip>
    • I had the same issue as eeryone here and I think I’ve FINALLY figured out a solution!
    • Go to c:/Program Files/Microsoft Office/Office 14
    • ight click on each program icon individually and unpin from BOTH your Taskbar and/or Start Menu. (e.g. EXCEL.EXE, MSACCESS.EXE, MSPUB.EXE, OUTLOOK.EXE, PWERPNT.EXE, WINWORD.EXE, etc.)
    • Then right click and select  “Pin to Start Menu” (not to Taskbar).
    • Do this for each program you want to eventually make itonto your Taskbar.
    • Now go to Start and then for each program (that should now show in start menu with the actual Microsoft Office icon), right clik and select “Pin to Taskbar”.
    • You can then Remove each one from th Start Menu if you wish by right clicking again and selecting “Remoe from this List”.
    • Your icons should now be back to their original ormat.
    • I’ve rebooted my system several times so far and the icons have remained.
    • Hopefully this will work for eve yone else as well!
    • Good Luck!!!

    • An alternate technique to recreate all of the icons

    • but I have found a very simple solution:
    1. Unpin all of the Office applications for which this is an issue from the task bar.
    2. In Windows Explorer navigate to the Office folder (for me this is Program Files (x86) > Microsoft Office > Office16)
    3. For each of the application .exe files you need:
    • 3.1 Right click on the .exe file
    • 3.2 Select Send To > Desktop (create shortcut)
    1. When all of the applications shortcuts are on your desktop, rename them if you want (by default they will all be in the form “APPLICATION.EXE - Shortcut”), for example, I renamed “WINWORD.EXE - Shortcut” as “Word”.
      1. Drag each shortcut to the task bar and drop it on
      1. The task bar item thumbnail should then keep the correct icon
      1. You can then delete the shortcuts from the desktop without losing the task bar thumbnails.

    Word Icons Generic White

    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/office/forum/office\_2003-word/ms-office-compatibility-pack-is-not-working-on/682c277b-cd11-4e4a-86a2-0352d248bcf5

    • <snip>
    • No, I have no other word processors apart from the obligatory Notepad and Wordpad. But would it explain identical behaviour on four different computers, two with Win 8.1 and two with Win 10?
    • Aha!!! Got it!!!
    • Musing on what I’d just said, I tried “opening with” Wordpad and ticked “always use this program”. The icon changed to something similar but with “DOCX” written in grey at the bottom. (I’d expected to see the normal Wordpad icon.)
    • Then I “opened with” Word once again, with the “always use” ticked. But I noticed that it gave me the choice of two Word programs - no obvious difference between the two. I tried the first - back again to the generic icon. So then I tried the second and ..... I have the Word docx icon back again!! Hurrah!
    • This was on a Win 8.1 machine. So I turned my attention to the Win 10 machine, which is the one where I could open a docx file from the hard disk but not an attachment from my favourite mail reader. This time “open with” didn’t give the option of choosing from two Word programs but, if I clicked on Properties, it did. Changed it and that works now, even opening from an email attachment!

    Windows Icons Suddenly Looking Generic?

Generic Icons – Remove Recent Windows updates

    Read this reply

    • The link to the zip file no longer works.
    • I resolved this issue by uninstalling the update for Microsoft office 2010.
    • Once uninstalled all the word and excel files instantly returned to their proper state without a reboot.

I don’t recommend uninstalling this update as it is a security update.

I plan to install it at a later date when Microsoft has patched this mess.

I have good backups and restore points.

The update that is responsible for the issue is below.

    • Security Update for Microsoft Office 2010 (KB2920748) 64-Bit Edition
    • Download size: 90 KB
    • You may need to restart your computer for this update to take effect.
    • Update type: Important
    • A security vulnerability exists in Microsoft Office 2010 64-Bit Edition that could allow arbitrary code to run when a maliciously modified file is opened. This update resolves that vulnerability.
    • More information:  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2920748
    • Help and Support:  http://support.microsoft.com/?LN=en-us

Congratulations, you’re the only one that actually figured this out. I’m working on a 32-bit version so I’m not sure which specific update it was (KB number did not match yours), but after pulling the updates, the client’s icons have been restored. Thank you for this post.

Use the MS tool to completely remove 2013 and having done so repair 2007

Acrobat DC Reader does not integrate with 2016 or 2007
