Migration from .onmicrosoft.com to a real domain name. What happened to current users who login to various office365 services with onmicrosoft.com account?

Hi Everyone,

Our company has an office365 plan with .onmicrosoft.com domain and we are planning to migrate to a real domain name. Most of our employees use there .onmicrosoft.com email address to log in to office 365 services, like Power BI, Azure ML, etc.

Once we switch to a real domain name, there email address will change to that new domain name (e.g. ******@example.onmicrosoft.com to someone@example.com). Now, what happens to there login to Power BI or Azure ML? Can they still log in to those services with there old .onmicrosoft.com account or they have to create a new account with the new email id?

Thanks,

Soumyajit

Hi Soumyajit Sen,

Thanks for posting here.

No, they needn't create a new email id, since the .onmicrosoft.com domain is the default one, and it isn't deleted. Which means you can always use this domain.

Meanwhile, you also can use that new domain name via verifying this domain in office 365, please let admin refer to the steps in the link below:

https://support.office.com/en-us/article/Add-a-domain-and-users-to-Office-365-6383f56d-3d09-4dcb-9b41-b5f5a5efd611#ID0EAABAAA=Step_2

After verifying that new domain, the admin need add an alias under their account, and set this alias as the primary, and then they can use this new alias to access their Office 365 apps. For detailed information, let admin refer to this article in the link below: https://support.office.com/en-us/article/Add-another-email-address-for-a-user-0b0bd900-68b1-4bf5-808b-5d240a7739f4?ui=en-US&rs=en-US&ad=US

Hope the above information helpful.

Regards,

Rudy

    Hello Soumyajit,

It seems to me that what you're referring to is actually the "User Principal Name" (UPN), which is the logon address, constructed by user@domain and is an independent attribute; hence, not necessarily matching the primary email address.

While you can have multiple secondary email addresses, for example "@domain.com" as primary & "@X.onmicrosoft.com" as secondary, you can only have one UPN.

So, if you add your "domain.com" you have two options:

    1. Keep the UPN as @X.onmicrosoft.com , while adding\changing email addresses as you see fit. This will allow you to control email addresses separately than UPN and your users will continue logging on as they used to.
    2. Change the UPN to ******@domain.com , to match your new primary email addresses- resulting in change of logon address.

I personally recommend option #2, as a matching primary email address and UPN are easier on the users.

Feel free to let me know if you need any further clarifications,

    Maor Bracha

    Hi Rudy,

Thanks for your quick response. So, just to be sure, my current users can use there .onmicrosoft.com email to access Power BI and Azure ML and will use the new email address for accessing there emails, that we are migrating to office 365 for there email, correct?

    Thanks,

    Soumyajit
