Attributing trademark to Microsoft Excel in a document?

What is the correct way to attribute trademark to Microsoft Excel for first mention in a document? "Microsoft(R) Excel (R)"? Or just "Microsoft Excel"? My document does include a legal statement that says 'All third party trademarks belong to their respective owners."

Screenshot from About Excel from MS Excel itself. Seems your understanding is correct.

On the cover of my book published by Academic Press (Elsevier) you will see Microsoft(R) Excel while the covers of my books published by the Institute of Physics have Microsoft Excel(R). And no MS rep has sued wither publisher or myself!

In former time a search for Microsoft trademarks yielded a useful page but today the links you find seem to be dead.

When I contacted MS when writing my first Excel book I was told never to use just Excel but always Microsoft Excel. We settled for the two-word approbation at the start of each chapter, and the single word thereafter. I think MS has become more mature with passing years.

IMHO you can do as you wish (including no (R)) and all will be well

    best wishes
