Onenote importing .onepkg file (need 365 subscription)

So I've been using Onenote for the past few years constantly. I had Office 2010 Home and Student edition and used the Onenote version that came with that suite for several years. I was prompted to upgrade my Onenote version automatically to Onenote 2016 so I upgraded it. Recently I exported a few notebooks because I wanted to free up some Onedrive space, so I exported them as .onepkg files and put them on my external harddrive. Now I need the notes I took in them urgently but when I try to open the notebook I get this message:

currently, you can only create notebooks on onedrive. activate an office 365 subscription for more notebook options.

I don't understand why its saying I need a office 365 subscription to open this file.. if I can export the file from the version I have, why can't I open it as well? I paid for my Office 2010 suite but now I'm told I need to purchase another subscription to use features that are essential to the program.

Is there a fix for this?

I need the file immediately.

If you reinstall Onenote 2010 after uninstalling Onenote 2016 you will be able to open your .onepkg files in Onenote 2010, nothing else.

But, if you want, you can (for each .onepkg):

  1. Open a .onepkg in the 2010 version
  2. Now you have a local notebook
  3. Move that notebook, using the File, Share feature, to Onedrive
  4. Close the notebook

After processing all .onepkg files this way upgrade to Onenote 2016 again. Open your notebooks in Onenote 2016 from Onedrive using File, Open or goto https://onedrive.live.com

open the Documents folder, open a notebook in Onenote Online (one for one) and click on Open in Onenote.

Then you migrated your notebooks to Onenote 2016 AND Onedrive.

    Thank you.

This will do but Microsoft needs to sort this out cause if I didn't have access to Onenote 2010 I would have to pay for a subscription for a feature that should be free.

Had I known I couldn't open the file in Onenote 2016 I wouldn't have deleted the notebook.

Does this mean that I can no longer use Onenote 2016 to read my Onenote notebook?

Is there a way to put it online again so I can read it in Onenote 2016?

I paid for my Office 2010 suite but now I'm told I need to purchase another subscription to use features that are essential to the program.

But you didn't pay for Onenote 2016. A paid Onenote 2016 can open the .onepkg files.

You are not the first one to fall into this upgrade trap.

The best fix is: uninstall Onenote 2016 and re-install Onenote 2010.
